Birmingham City fans share relief as deadline day saga leads to last-gasp win vs Swansea City

The Blues beat the Welsh giants thanks to a late winner from the forward they nearly loaned out on deadline day.

Birmingham City beat Swansea City 1-0 on Saturday afternoon courtesy of an injury-time winner from Lyndon Dykes.

Dykes is no stranger to late goals for the Blues this season after the towering forward scored in the eighth minute of added time at Blackburn Rovers to complete a dramatic comeback victory last month.

Two of Chris Davies’ substitutes combined as on-loan Sunderland winger Patrick Roberts delivered a wonderfully whipped ball into Swansea’s box, which was dispatched by Dykes with a deft header.

Following Birmingham’s significant summer outlay, Dykes almost departed the club before deadline day, but the Blues fans are understandably buzzing that the Scottish international striker has stayed at St Andrew’s.

Birmingham City fans react to Lyndon Dykes’ late winner against Swansea City

Scottish Premier League outfit Hibernian were in talks to sign Dykes on loan from Birmingham in the final stages of the summer transfer window.

However, Dykes’ loan move to Hibs fell through, and the Scotsman has shown his intent to force his way into Davies’ starting XI with his second game-winning goal of the Championship season.

With the Blues headed for a goalless stalemate against Swansea, Davies turned to Dykes to replace the unusually quiet Jay Stansfield with 86 minutes on the clock.

Davies’ bold decision proved to be inspired, as it was at Ewood Park, as Dykes sent the Blues fans into raptures with his injury-time headed winner.

Birmingham fans were ecstatic on social media about the result, and leaped to the defence of Dykes.

One Birmingham fan said: “For the stick he gets, he comes up with some important goals”.

Another posted: “Said it before, i’ll say it again, get off his back, he’ll score goals. Chuffed for him.”

A third added: “Thank god we didn’t sell you super Lynny”, as another noted: “Never sell this man”.

A fifth Bluenose said: “That’s why he shouldn’t have been sent to Scotland”.

One Blues fan noted: “Like I keep saying fire it into the box! That creates chances! Great header Dykes.”

Chris Davies must start Patrick Roberts after Swansea City cameo

Birmingham signed Roberts on loan from Sunderland for the season, and the tricky winger is already recreating his dynamic form that helped the Black Cats to promotion.

Davies introduced Roberts for Lewis Koumas in the 67th minute, and the Black Cats winger was far more impactful in a much shorter space of time than the youngster.

Roberts created more chances and enjoyed a far greater passing accuracy than Koumas, and Davies should be inclined to start the Sunderland loanee next time out to recreate his dynamic best that helped inspire the late winner against Swansea.
