Nathan Jones will take charge of his first south London derby clash against Millwall this Saturday, but had the Lions made a different choice in 2023, both clubs could have looked very different.
The Charlton Athletic manager arrived at The Valley in February 2024, coming in as a permanent replacement for Michael Appleton. Jones had previously served as a coach during Chris Powell’s tenure, and has been a hit with the south Londoners upon his return.
Millwall, meanwhile, have had Alex Neil as their boss since December 2024, extending his deal in May 2025. The former Sunderland manager has brought in strong signings including Will Smallbone and Alfie Doughty this summer.
Rewind to 2023, though, and Millwall could have chosen another path that could have led to Jones standing in The Den dug out instead.

Millwall considered Nathan Jones after Gary Rowett departure
After Gary Rowett left Millwall by mutual consent in October, the Lions were linked with a number of free agent managers including Kevin Muscat and John Eustace.
Jones was on that list, and The Telegraph reported he was emerging as a strong contender for the job.
The former Luton boss had been out of work since his Southampton departure that February after just three months and 14 matches in charge.
However, Joe Edwards came in instead. The former England Under-20s caretaker boss only lasted four months and was sacked after suffering a seven game winless run.
Less than two years later, Jones guided Charlton to win promotion to the Championship at Wembley. Addicks fans will be hoping he can be the one to end their 29-year winless streak against their local rivals on Saturday.
Nathan Jones’ record against Millwall
The Welshman doesn’t boast the best managerial history against the Lions, though.
Ex-Luton Town manager Jones has played seven games against the south London side, winning one of those fixtures. He drew three and lost three of the other fixtures. The one victory against Millwall came in 2021, with Luton beating them 2-0 and Harry Cornick scoring both goals.
He did score against Millwall as a player though, but never won a game against them.
This weekend’s clash gives Jones the perfect opportunity to boost that record as well as finally earning derby bragging rights for Charlton.
