Southampton and Portsmouth have achieved a rare feat after failing to find the net in their long-awaited derby day.
The south coast rivals went head-to-head at St Mary’s in their first competitive meeting since 2019 when they met in the League Cup. Their last league clash came all the way back in 2012.
Portsmouth haven’t tasted victory against their bitter rivals since 2010 – a 4-1 win in the FA Cup. Southampton, meanwhile, beat them last time out, thumping their foes 4-0.
Those high-scoring affairs will have felt like a lifetime ago during Sunday’s 0-0, with both sides managing just one shot on target each – and it’s been a very long time since neither side managed to find the back of the net in their meetings.

Portsmouth and Southampton haven’t seen out a goalless draw in almost 125 years
Despite Southampton versus Portsmouth being as feisty as expected off the pitch, on the pitch neither side could break the deadlock.
Andre Dozzell hit the crossbar from distance early on, while Cameron Archer rounded Pompey goalkeeper Ben Killip but couldn’t find the net. Southampton had a glorious chance to win it at the end from a corner, but the score remained level.
This is the first time the south coast rivals have seen out a 0-0 since September 1900 – almost exactly 125 years ago.
That was in the Southern League in the club’s third competitive meeting.
Portsmouth’s Connor Ogilvie and Nicolas Schmid suffer injuries
Mousinho was forced into two unexpected changes during his side’s clash at St Mary’s.
Goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid and left-back Connor Ogilvie hit the turf after Fellows pushed them into each other in the first half. Schmid tried to carry on but was soon replaced by Ben Killip.
Killip had been limited to one Carabao Cup appearance against Reading in August.
Ogilvie, meanwhile, continued until the break despite being physically hurt by the challenge. He was replaced by Jordan Williams for the second half, doing well to contain Southampton’s new man Tom Fellows, who signed from West Brom this summer.
Mousinho confirmed Ogilvie had suffered a ‘severe neck injury’ and Schmid has suffered a fracture in his post-match interview with Sky Sports.
