Sheffield United make stunning Chris Wilder approach following Ipswich Town hammering

Sheffield United boss Ruben Selles could soon come to the end of his Blades tenure, with COH Sports sounding out an incredible move back to Chris Wilder.

After five games in the 2025/26 Championship season, Sheffield United are still pointless under Ruben Selles.

Sheffield United suffered defeat to Ipswich Town on Friday night as a sorry Blades side shipped five goals, with Jaden Philogene bagging a hat-trick.

Pressure was already on Selles, and now it appears that Sheffield United owners COH Sports could be keen to move on sooner rather than later.

In the wake of the disastrous defeat, Sheffield United could soon change their head coach, with the owners keen to reinstate Chris Wilder.

Sheffield United make Chris Wilder approach to replace Ruben Selles

It has been reported, via The Star, that Sheffield United are keen to bring in Chris Wilder to replace Ruben Selles.

The former Blades boss has reportedly been ‘sounded out’ by COH Sports, who are keen to rectify their disastrous appointment by turning back to Wilder.

COH Sports’ decision to part ways with Wilder in June has backfired massively, and with zero points in five Championship games, it appears that faith in Selles has been lost.

Wilder had previously alluded to his Sheffield United dismissal being’difficult’, but made it clear that he held no ill feelings towards the club or the owners.

COH Sports must admit Ruben Selles error if they turn to Chris Wilder

While appointing Chris Wilder would make progress in rectifying COH Sports’ damning errors this summer, they will also have to admit that they were wrong to turn to Ruben Selles after such a bright campaign under their former boss.

In difficult circumstances, Sheffield United managed to reach the Championship play-off final, and were in the running for automatic promotion for large portions of the 2024/25 season, making it unjustifiable that they would turn to someone else.

The decision to bring in Ruben Selles was seen as a change of direction by the owners, and they have now appeared to have backtracked on that decision.

COH Sports will not be keen to let such a decision linger and will want to ensure that damage limitation can take place.
