Sheffield Wednesday’s upcoming clash with Grimsby Town looks set to be met with a boycott by Owls fans, and the latest decision from the club has made it crystal clear for the Mariners why there is discontent in S6.
Sheffield Wednesday continue to protest against Dejphon Chansiri following a period of chaos at Hillsborough Stadium.
Several games this season have already seen Sheffield Wednesday supporters display their opposition to Chansiri, whether it is their ‘wear black and gold until it’s sold’ campaign or their strategic boycott of EFL Cup games.
The second round of the EFL Cup saw a large majority of Sheffield Wednesday fans boycott the win against Leeds United, and it looks as though they will take the same action as Grimsby Town come to Hillsborough.
While a strong contingent of Grimsby Town supporters are expected to make the trip into Yorkshire for the tie, some may be left in doubt over Chansiri’s recent bizarre decision.

Sheffield Wednesday ticketing update leaves Grimsby Town fans livid
Grimsby Town have released a ticketing update via their club website, which said: “We have received confirmation from Sheffield Wednesday that an additional 2,000 tickets will be available for Tuesday night’s game, on the condition that all 2,000 are sold and subject to the approval of SWFC’s Safety Advisory Group and South Yorkshire Police.
“Details of how to order and collect tickets from this additional allocation will be confirmed as soon as possible. Should the 2,000 tickets not be sold, orders in this area will be refunded.”
This means that fans could have their tickets refunded if the entire allocation is not filled, which raises questions for those wishing to plan travel to the game.
Understandably, Grimsby Town fans reacted negatively to the decision, suggesting that it is ‘bizarre behaviour from them and doesn’t make any sense’, according to one supporter.
Another fan said: “Imagine 1,997 tickets are sold but because 3 didn’t sell, they’re going to cancel people going. No wonder they want their owner out.”
Mariners supporters continued, as one said: “No wonder their fans are boycotting.”
The ‘weird way of doing business’, as it was described as by another Grimsby Town supporter only fueled the feelings that Sheffield Wednesday supporters have of their club in its current state, as one wrote: “This absolutely reeks of our owner. What a disgrace he is, don’t buy a single ticket, because if you need to secure a refund, good luck.”

Grimsby Town fans have already planned to show solidarity with Sheffield Wednesday
While a large number of Grimsby Town supporters are expected to go to the EFL Cup clash with Sheffield Wednesday, they still intend to show support for the Owls in an alternative manner.
The Mariners Trust confirmed that they plan to show ‘solidarity’ with the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust and have encouraged fellow fans to protest by ‘refraining from buying any pints, pies, or other items inside the stadium’.
Mariners Trust ended their statement having written: “Football clubs belong to their communities and must be protected from poor ownership and management.”
This recent decision by Sheffield Wednesday will only fuel more anger towards Dejphon Chansiri, and now it is coming through more than one base.
Mariners fans may outnumber Sheffield Wednesday in the cup tie, so their actions against Chansiri could hugely benefit the Owls fans in their fight to get their club back.
