Grimsby Town Supporters’ Trust responds to Sheffield Wednesday requests for cup clash

Sheffield Wednesday are set to face Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup third round later this month, but the focus of the fixture is currently far away from what is going to happen on the pitch.

The South Yorkshire side fought off local rivals Leeds United on penalties in round two, while the Mariners also stunned a Premier League club, taking Manchester United down in a shootout too. Grimsby were fined by the English Football League for a rule breach in the tie, but remain in the competition.

Sheffield Wednesday are celebrating their 158th anniversary this week. There is little for the club to celebrate currently, though, due to the Owls’ ongoing ownership issues under Dejphon Chansiri.

Protests are coming thick and fast, and another Sheffield Wednesday boycott is being planned at Hillsborough for their Carabao Cup clash against Grimsby on September 16. Now, the Mariners’ Supporters’ Trust have detailed how they plan to throw support behind their troubled opponents.

The Mariners Trust encourages Grimsby fans to boycott purchases at Sheffield Wednesday

Taking to X on Thursday, Grimsby’s Supporters’ Trust, the Mariners Trust released a statement on their approach to the Wednesday game.

It said: “The Mariners Trust Board recently connected with the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust after the draw was made for the next round of the cup. The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust are continuing their campaign to protest the mismanagement of their club and are asking home fans to boycott the game.

“They’ve reached out to us and asked for our support. In solidarity with their cause, the travelling Mariners are encouraged to join the boycott by refraining from buying any pints, pies, or other items inside the stadium. They would also appreciate it if our fans wore last season’s yellow shirt to show our support for their black and gold campaign.

“Football clubs belong to their communities and must be protected from poor ownership and management.”

Wrexham previously supported Wednesday by wearing their black and gold shirts when they faced the Owls to show solidarity to their ‘black and gold until it’s sold campaign’, with their owners pledging to donate profits to the club’s Supporters’ Trust.

Sheffield Wednesday fans’ London protest and MP sending letters to the Thai Embassy

A section of Owls fans are demonstrating against their owner in London on Thursday.

The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust have joined the London Owls on the club’s 158th birthday protest outside the Thai Embassy.

The hope is to attract as much media coverage of the club’s issues as possible by taking the protest to the capital.

The Member of Parliament for Sheffield South East – the area where Wednesday play – Clive Betts has also written to the Royal Thai Embassy ahead of the planned protest this afternoon, asking for their help to persuade Chansiri to sell.
