Sheffield United suffered a 5-0 hammering at the hands of Ipswich Town on Friday evening, leaving serious question marks over Ruben Selles.

The Tractor Boys resoundingly beat Sheffield United thanks to a stunning Jaden Philogene hat-trick for Ipswich and goals from George Hirst and Jack Clarke.

Selles hailed Philogene after the game, but it was Clarke’s goal that pleased Kieran McKenna most from his side’s five-goal haul.

Ahead of the game, eyebrows were raised regarding Ruben Selles’ team selection, with prized asset Gustavo Hamer being dropped to the bench alongside striker Tyrese Campbell.

Selles’ Sheffield United future is in question, given the Blades’ barren start to the season, and now the former Hull City boss has commented on his future and whether he retains the support of the Bramall Lane hierarchy.

Ruben Selles comments on his Sheffield United future after Ipswich Town loss

It seemed a massive gamble for Selles to drop Hamer for the Ipswich clash, and the chips did not fall in the Sheffield United boss’ favour as a result.

EFL Analysis exclusively revealed ahead of the Ipswich horror show that Sheffield United chiefs will give Selles time to rectify his nightmare start, but the timeline for his sacking may now have been pushed up after the latest embarrassment.

Six defeats from his first six games in charge at Sheffield United leave many fans thinking he is on borrowed time in the Blades dugout, but Selles will “keep working hard” to turn things around.

When asked about his future, Selles told Sky Sports: “Well, obviously the business is like that, and if you don’t win football matches, your position is going to be discussed always, not only for me but for any coach in the world.

“For us, I think it’s only one way, to keep working hard until our very last second in the club and try to give always 100%.

“But, at least if you finish the job and then you didn’t get the result that you want, at least you are clear in what is your principles, your values, and your way to do things.”

Selles was honest in that he understands the cut-throat nature of the business of modern-day football, but are principles more important than performances?

With the Blades rock-bottom of the Championship table, patience is wearing extremely thin among the Sheffield United supporter base towards Selles, but he is “not worried” about the owner’s decision, just his players.

Ruben Selles on whether he has the support of Sheffield United owners

On paper, Sheffield United have a squad more than capable of challenging for promotion, but the stark drop-off from their performances under Chris Wilder to now is remarkable.

COH Sports’ decision to sack Wilder in the wake of Sheffield United’s play-off final defeat to Sunderland was not a popular one for Blades fans, and now the owners are having to live with the consequences of their unanimously risky decision.

When asked if he has the support of the Sheffield United owners, Selles replied: “Well, I think that’s a big question.

“I think they have been supporting with me until today. I didn’t speak with them, obviously, after the game.

“Listen, things happen in football, and people need to make decisions as I need to make decisions with my lineup. So I’m not worried about that.

“I’m just worried about if we go for the training how we can do better how we can get the the boys up in their morale, how do we prepare the next game and that’s all what it is for me.

“What is the decision for other people or the support as I say always I’m the first critic with myself and I’m the first one that put pressure and it’s always going to be like that.

“The support has been there, I cannot answer you today because I didn’t speak with anybody.”

With the ruthless nature of modern-day football and the bitterly embarrassing defeat at Portman Road, it remains to be seen how long the Sheffield United owners will give Selles to turn around the Spaniard’s sinking ship.
