Wrexham promotion hero must impress Phil Parkinson before January window or face exit

With the plethora of signings made by the Dragons this summer, it could be one star’s last season for the Welsh giants.

Despite making several marquee signings over the summer, Phil Parkinson’s side have managed just one win and four points from their opening four league outings.

Hollywood-owned Wrexham spent heavily in the transfer window, with one of their most notable captures being their £6.5m signing of Ben Sheaf from Coventry City.

Unfortunately for one Dragons promotion hero, Sheaf’s big-money move has placed further emphasis on him to work his way into Parkinson’s plans this season, or face being moved on in the January transfer window.

Elliot Lee must impress Phil Parkinson to stay at Wrexham

Despite playing a pivotal role in Wrexham making history with successive promotions, midfielder Elliot Lee is facing his potential last chance saloon at the Racecourse.

The veteran midfielder arrived at Wrexham on a free transfer in the summer of 2022 following his Luton Town exit, with the Dragons then in the National League.

Over the next three seasons, Lee featured 149 times under Parkinson as an integral cog in their journey to the Championship.

However, Lee has fallen down the pecking order under Parkinson after their significant summer outlay, with the central midfielder yet to make an appearance in the Championship so far this season.

Parkinson has limited Lee to just two appearances, both in the Carabao Cup, in which the 30-year-old scored against Hull City and notched an assist at Preston North End.

Lee’s current Wrexham contract expires in the summer of 2027, and although Parkinson hailed him as “brilliant” last season to the BBC, there appears to be little room for the promotion hero in his plans this season.

Reports throughout the summer linked Lee with a departure, which could now come in January for the former Luton stalwart, who has fallen victim to wider squad issues at Wrexham.

Wrexham’s squad issue after transfer window has not helped Elliot Lee

With owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac targeting promotion to the Premier League, Wrexham were one of the biggest spenders in the Championship.

Shockingly, this could continue this season, as EFL Analysis exclusively revealed recently that Wrexham could spend £70m before breaching FFP due to the Dragons’ substantial commercial revenue.

Even more Wrexham expenditure, specifically in the central midfield roles, would almost certainly spell an end to Lee’s time in Wales.

EFL expert George Elek told the Not the Top 20 podcast after deadline day that Parkinson now has “got a lot of central midfielders” at his disposal, as he shared concerns with Wrexham’s summer spending.

Therefore, Lee could become a victim of the Wrexham success that he played an imperative role in creating, and he must work his way into contention under Parkinson or face being shipped out in the mid-season window.
