‘History makers’… Wrexham fans are all on cloud nine after winning promotion to the Championship

Wrexham made history on Saturday evening as a 3-0 victory over Charlton Athletic secured their place in the second tier for the first time since 1982.

Only two years ago, Wrexham were celebrating promotion from the National League, yet their owners, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, outlined their dream of reaching the Premier League.

Some will have laughed at the concept of little old Wrexham reaching the top-flight, but the Red Dragons are now only one promotion away after winning the League One promotion battle.

Remarkably, the Welsh side have become the first team in the top five divisions of English football to win three successive promotions, with Phil Parkinson writing his name into the history books.

On a day when Cardiff City suffered relegation to League One, Wrexham fans were sent into dreamland after their promotion to the Championship was confirmed.

Wrexham fans react after winning promotion to the Championship

Birmingham City have achieved a record-breaking campaign in League One after cantering to the title under Chris Davies.

But Wrexham’s rapid rise into the second tier is the more remarkable achievement, and their elated supporters took to X after the game to react following the 3-0 win over Charlton.

“WE ARE GOING UP!!! TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!” one supporter excitedly exclaimed.

“Amazing result!!!!!!! Up the town!!!!” another exclaimed while a third wrote: “UP THE TOWN. OFF TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP.”

“Back to back to back. What a club,” one supporter said while a sixth commented: “It doesn’t get more special than this.”

Wrexham have done the unthinkable

No one of a Wrexham persuasion could have ever predicted this happening.

When McElhenney and Reynolds completed their takeover of the club in February 2021, they were stuck in mid-table in the National League.

For years, they were stranded in the fifth tier but the Hollywood superstars have completely transformed the town and sparked new-found belief.

Now, the sky is the limit for Wrexham, who will surely be aiming to win promotion to the Premier League sooner rather than later.
