Ruben Selles offers baffling assessment of Hull City’s terrible performance against Derby County

Hull City are staring down the barrel of relegation after a late Nat Phillips winner broke their hearts at the MKM Stadium.

After Luton Town beat Coventry City in the early kick-off, Hull knew that all three points against Derby would have confirmed their Championship status for another campaign.

Ruben Selles issued a rallying cry to his players ahead of kick-off, urging them to get the job done and avoid the drama of a final day.

But when the Tigers faithful needed their players to step up to the occasion, they crumbled and that has been the story of their season.

Hull pushed and probed but only landed two of their 15 shots on target against the Rams before Nat Phillips powered home his 84th-minute winner, with Selles offering a baffling assessment of the performance.

Ruben Selles claimed Hull City had ‘done enough’ to beat Derby County

A match against a relegation rival always had the potential to be a banana skin. City had only won five of their 22 home games this term – the worst record in the Championship – while Derby beat West Brom 3-1 on Monday.

Truthfully, the players didn’t show the attitude and desire required in a relegation dogfight, labouring around the pitch instead of showing an intensity to score.

It explains why Hull are the second-lowest scorers in the division this term, yet Selles somehow claimed the hosts did enough to win the game, despite recording an xG of just 0.44 in the match.

“I’m disappointed, I’m very disappointed with the result,” Selles told Hull Live. “I think we did a lot of things that we wanted to do. We didn’t find that situation in the final third to score a goal, and then in one action in one set piece, we lost it.

“It’s difficult to take because I think this team has done enough, but we have no other way than to analyse, accept it and accept the fact that if we win the last game of the season, we will be where we want to be.”

Hull didn’t do enough on the day to win the match at all and Derby dug deep to produce what could prove to be a vital three points in the battle for survival.

What the Derby loss means for Hull City in the relegation fight

A win for the Tigers would have kept them up, but unfortunately, defeat leaves them needing to at least draw against Portsmouth next weekend to stand any chance.

Hull remain on 48 points and occupy the final relegation place, while Luton, Preston and Derby are all on 49.

With the Rams hosting Stoke City, who are on 50 points, Selles’ men can guarantee survival with a win no matter the results elsewhere.

However, if Luton lose to West Brom and Preston drop all three points against Bristol City, due to their superior goal difference, a draw at Fratton Park keeps the Tigers up.

It promises to be a nail-biting final day whatever happens, and Hull will be hoping they’re celebrating survival on the South Coast.
