Frank Lampard’s Coventry City went down to ten men early on against Luton Town, with Jay Dasilva shown red after 13 minutes for a foul on Millenic Alli.

It was a huge decision during a pivotal match for both teams, with the Hatters eventually able to take advantage against their visitors. Dasilva’s career started at Luton before he joined Chelsea as a boy, to add further insult to injury regarding the first half incident.

Lampard started Haji Wright and Ellis Simms again, but the game was mostly played in their half to defend against their hosts with a numerical advantage. The game was taken away from them in terms of being competitive until the 68th minute when Liam Walsh saw red himself.

It was a shame to not be more of a contest given the record they were going for against Luton. That said, they require only a few more points to secure a play-off berth, but this could be a damaging result ahead of 3pm. Cov may now have a nervous wait ahead of a huge game against Middlesbrough next weekend.

Coventry fans react to Jay Dasilva red card incident against Luton

They were backed to win by Sam Parkin and Matt Bloomfield was ale to do that and get the better of a club he was once linked to. The game could have had a far different outlook if the referee had made a different decision after 13 minutes, with waves of Luton pressure ensuing for the next 55 minutes.

The final 20 minutes were much more of an even game in the end, but the home side won it late through Shandon Baptiste’s strike in the last minute of normal time. The question of what it could have been as a contest will be asked post-match.

Cov fans fumed. with one stating: “Absolutely robbed. Never a foul nor a red.”

Another two added: “Did he even touch him??” and “Didn’t even touch him whatsoever.”

Another Coventry fan said: “Lino right next to it didn’t even acknowledge it…”

Having said that, not everyone was as convinced it was a clear-cut error, including Sky Sports’ Championship punditry team for the game at Kenilworth Road.

Sky Sports pundits react to Dasilva red card

Former Notts County and Swansea City boss Luke Williams was in the Sky Sports studio. He said: “It’s tough because there’s no intention at all but he’s denying a clear chance on goal. So, by the letter of the law. I can’t see any way he’s meant that at all.

“I think in the moments before the ball is struck, he’s probably somewhere he doesn’t want to be. He turns a couple of time and that means he loses his speed and his momentum. He’s playing catch up at that point. But, like I say, there’s nothing deliberate about it. Very unfortunate.”

Chris Iwelumo added: “Goalkeeper is coming out as well but you can see Dasilva is trying to get back in but as soon as it goes over the top, he’s on the wrong side. He’ll be disappointed with that. For a defender, he’s just trying to get back on the inside.”

It was a feisty game with numerous cards on both sides, and a point apiece may have been beneficial if results go their way later roday, but it will now be Cov who will be both be looking nervously at results this afternoon and Luton took a huge step towards safety instead.
