How many points Bristol City and Coventry City need to secure their Championship play-off spots

There is no league quite like the Championship.

With four games to go, there are 10 teams who could theoretically finish in the Championship play-off spots.

If the league was to end today, it would be Bristol City and Coventry City who will join Sunderland and one of the three sides battling it out for automatic promotion.

Both sides have done incredibly well to get to this position and Opta is predicting Bristol and Coventry to finish in the top six.

But how many points do they both need to extend their season?

How many points do Bristol City need to confirm a play-off spot?

The surprise package in the top six, the work Liam Manning has done to get the Robins fighting for promotion is outstanding.

A running joke amongst Championship fans is that is that Bristol are destined to always finish 12th in the table. Not this time though.

Currently sat on 64 points, four clear of West Brom who occupy seventh, Bristol need to pick up just six more points according to Opta in order to consolidate their spot in the top six.

Games against Sunderland and Leeds United will be difficult, as well as a trip to relegation-threatened Luton Town but the data analysts suggest that they will have what it takes and should West Brom keep up with them and match their results, confirmation of a play-off place can be wrapped up with a game to spare.

How many points do Coventry City need to secure a play-off spot?

For Coventry, the stakes are slightly higher – even if they are a point behind Bristol City.

With a Good Friday fixture against West Brom to come, avoiding defeat would be huge for Frank Lampard’s side.

Opta states that Coventry will finish with 69 points and therefore needing two wins from four games to fend off the chasing pack.

A win for West Brom and any other teams behind them – in particular Middlesbrough and Millwall – on Friday and it’s panic stations though.

Tony Mowbray’s men and Boro both have superior goal differences to the Sky Blues and could go above them.

A final day of the season clash against Middlesbrough also makes for great entertainment – as well as back-to-back away trips against Plymouth and Luton.

Who will make it?
