Frank Lampard could be 90 minutes away from matching 19-year Coventry City record vs Luton Town

Coventry City travel to face Luton Town this weekend, where they will eye a league double over their hosts following a 3-2 win earlier in the campaign.

However, it won’t be simple for Frank Lampard’s side against Matt Bloomfield’s resurgent Luton. They have put together a decent run of recent form to give them a chance of survival.

They recorded back-to-back wins in the recent Championship Easter Weekend fixtures, which has them on the edge of safety if they can get themselves ahead of Hull City or Derby County before they face one another on Saturday.

Both teams have plenty to play for, though, with Lampard’s Coventry heading into the final two games inside the play-off places and with another shot at a place in the play-off final in sight.

Ironically, it was Luton who got the better of Mark Robins in Cov’s last play-off campaign. A defeat on penalties at Wembley perhaps adds an added dimension to Saturday lunchtime’s game in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Coventry City can fix unwanted recent form if they beat Luton Town

For both sides, they still have their fate in their own hands but know full well that they must now push on to put serious distance between themselves and their closest rivals. EFL pundit Sam Parkin is backing Luton to be the side to do that.

However, if Coventry win and other results go their way, the Sky Blues will secure a top-six finish this weekend. By contrast, defeat for Luton could all but relegate them if a number of teams above them collect the required points.

The reverse fixture ended 3-2 in October for then manager Robins after Haji Wright secured a winner in added time. That result has allowed Coventry to match a 19-year record this weekend. Coventry are eyeing a first league double over Luton since 2005/06.

It won’t necessarily be easy against a Luton side who have won consecutive league games for the first time since September. They last won three in a row all the way back in March 2023. The motivation is there for Coventry to avenge their play-off final loss with a league double which could relegate Luton.

They require only a few more points to secure a play-off berth alongside Bristol City and getting multiple of their best attacking players could be key against Luton if they can get them on the pitch and match them on a physical level.

Frank Lampard may have done a remarkable job since replacing Robins. But, somewhat worryingly, he has seen his Coventry side lose four of the last eight at the business end of the season. They must arrest that immediately and head into the form with momentum and confidence.

Coventry City and Luton Town’s recent head-to-head record

Lampard has broken records this season, with Cov fans ‘apologising’ for how well he’s done after taking over from a club icon. He will need to match Robins’ feat in order to beat Luton and set a new record, though.

Coventry don’t head into it in their most scintillating form, having lost three of their last four away league games and only drawing once. Prior to that, they had won four in a row on the road. They also don’t have a strong record against Luton in recent memory since that league double in 2006.

Luton have lost just one of their last 10 league games against Coventry, including four wins and five draws in that time. That means it was in the reverse fixture in October when Coventry broke their duck against one of their recent bogey sides, and they will have to do so again here.
