Coventry City fans apologise for ‘doubting’ Frank Lampard as 18-year ‘curse’ is broken vs Preston North End

Coventry City are on a roll under Frank Lampard, and their latest win was an especially pertinent one, as it ended a long-lasting curse on the club.

When Mark Robins was sacked by the Coventry City board back in November, fans were enraged at what they deemed an unjust decision against a faithful servant of the club.

Installing Frank Lampard as his replacement also raised a few eyebrows, given the former Chelsea man’s managerial record overall. But, credit where credit’s due, he’s doing a magnificent job.

After their latest victory — a 2-1 win over Preston North End — the Sky Blues are seventh in the Championship table, just one point off the play-off places.

Coventry City fans laud Frank Lampard for turning around fortunes

Reacting to the win on Twitter/X, Coventry fans were over the moon with the team and Lampard, and plenty of them are now admitting they judged their new manager too swiftly.

One said, “I’m sorry for ever doubting this man,” while another added, “what an amazing job Frank Lampard is doing.”

Supporters praised Lampard’s “aura” and played up his “coaching ability,” while droves of Coventry fan’s were hyped by their “super” manager who is “flying” in his new role.

It was a notable victory, not just for the three points on the day, but for ending a so-called “curse” that has plagued Coventry for 18 years. Believe it or not, this was the first win against Preston since 2007.

On that monumental win, fans claimed Lampard has the “winning recipe” and demanded the club should “build the statue now.”

That’s the second time this season Lampard has broken a hoodoo for Coventry, after guiding them to a win over Swansea — their first win over the Welsh outfit in a massive 44 years.

Coventry City beat Preston North End for first time since 2007

Over the years, Preston have absolutely dominated Coventry, with 23 wins to the Sky Blues’ 11, with 16 draws in the middle.

Before yesterday’s win, Coventry had failed to beat Preston in any competition in their last 14 meetings stretching back to 2013, when they prevailed in a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy game. You have to go all the way back to 2007, and another eight games, to find Coventry’s last win against Preston in the league.

During that run, Coventry have suffered 14 league defeats to the Lancashire outfit, across League One and the Championship.

While not quite as historic a struggle as the Swansea curse, this is yet another massive weight lifted off Coventry shoulders, and they’ve now every reason to believe Lampard can lead the team to the play-offs this season — and perhaps, an unexpected promotion at the end of it all.
