Supercomputer claims League One promotion race is over, Wrexham and Birmingham City are going to make history

With just a handful of games to go this season, it seems the League One promotion race has already been settled, and it’ll be a historic campaign for both Birmingham City and Wrexham.

The fight to make it to the Championship this year is an important one for both clubs for very different reasons. While Birmingham are desperate to get back to the second tier at the first time of asking, Wrexham are looking to keep climbing the football ladder after promotion in the last two seasons.

Birmingham have found a way to win of late, grinding out results as they relentlessly march towards the League One title.

Wrexham, meanwhile, secured a crucial three points this weekend while their nearest rivals, Wycombe Wanderers fell to defeat at Reading to open up a six-point gap at the top.

Birmingham City set for League One record points tally

Birmingham still have seven league games to play this season, but their claim to the title is all-but confirmed already.

The Blues have broken plenty of records this year, but there is still a massive one left to complete, and according to data from Opta’s supercomputer, Chris Davies’ men will indeed break the record for the highest points tally in League One history.

Birmingham currently have 92 points on the board. The record in League One is held by Wolves, who accrued 103 points back in the 2013/14 campaign.

As per Opta’s final predicted table, Birmingham should end up with a whopping 106.51 points this year. Let’s call that 106, which means there’s another 14 points still to come; that’s the equivalent of four wins and two draws from their final seven matches.

In truth, we’d be surprised if Birmingham don’t get a clean sweep and come away with 21 out of 21 to absolutely obliterate the record on their way to the title this season.

Wrexham are going up, they’ll claim historic third-successive promotion

To be fair, that title has been Birmingham’s for a while now anyway. The far more interesting battle has been the race to go up with the Blues in second place.

After the results this weekend, Wrexham are now firmly in the driving seat, with a six-point lead over Wycombe. Even with the Chairboys having a game in hand, it would still take a monumental slip-up from the Red Dragons now.

Opta’s predicted table as of 06/04/25

Opta now predict that Wrexham will practically ease to automatic promotion, with a final points haul of 88.74. Let’s round that up to 89 points; that’s only another eight points from where Wrexham are now, or equivalent to two wins and two draws from their final five matches.

Still, that would be enough to secure promotion, with Wrexham’s chances of success standing at 75.8% right now compared to the 18.42% chance for Wycombe to go up in second place.

Doing so would give Wrexham their third-successive promotion, which would be another piece of EFL history, becoming the first club to get back-to-back-to-back promotions in the Football League.

Next, attention will turn to how to prepare for life in the Championship for both these clubs. Birmingham, we know, will be very aggressive in their spending as they look to get back to the Premier League immediately. Whether Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney can match that, remains to be seen.
