Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards will want to keep up Championship award trend held by Regis Le Bris

Rob Edwards has won the Championship Manager of the Month award for August, and he will be hoping to get his hands on more trophies this season.

Middlesbrough have made a “brilliant” start under Edwards and head into this weekend’s visit to Preston North End undefeated thus far.

Not only have Boro yet to lose, Edwards’ side are the only Championship side to achieve maximum points from their opening four league games.

Edwards won the Championship Manager of the Month award for August ahead of Ryan Mason, Frank Lampard and Mark Robins.

Middlesbrough have established themselves as early title favourites following their flawless start, and Edwards will be desperate to continue a four-year Championship trend regarding his August award.

Rob Edwards will want to continue August MOTM promotion trend

Edwards had an “important” reminder for Middlesbrough fans that his award was a collective effort among the Boro staff, but his instant impact at the Riverside has been undeniable.

Despite initial fears about Edwards’ system for Middlesbrough, his new-look squad have fit like a glove in his three-back formation, as evidenced by their magnificent start.

Edwards is no stranger to promotion to the top flight after masterminding Luton Town’s remarkable rise, but his August award was surprisingly his first Championship Manager of the Month award, and the seventh Boro boss to win this particular prize.

However, Edwards will have his sights set firmly on promotion, and the Boro boss will be desperate to repeat the feats of the last four August Manager of the Month award winners in the Championship.

Last season, Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris won the award after the Black Cats’ outstanding start under his stewardship, with his side going on to win the play-off final against Sheffield United.

In 2023/24, now-Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca won the August award before taking Leicester City up to the top flight as champions.

The season prior, Paul Heckingbottom’s brilliant start to the campaign at Sheffield United, which led to their automatic promotion, won him the prestigious prize.

Finally, in 2021/22, Marco Silva was the Manager of the Month for August in the Championship and went on to win the title with Fulham.

Will this bizarre yet brilliant four-year feat, pointed out by author Rob Fletcher on X, be extended to five come May thanks to Edwards’ exploits?

What Rob Edwards wants from Middlesbrough after winning start

Momentum can be a powerful force in football, but there will inevitably be a blip at some point in the 2025/26 season for Edwards’ side.

As seen by Sunderland last season, Le Bris’ side lost five games on the bounce before going on to achieve promotion through the play-off campaign.

After being crowned Manager of August, Edwards said: “It’s been great to get some results early doors.

“But, equally we’re only four games in and there’s 42 to go so we’re not getting carried away.

“Performances have been good – we’ve deserved the victories – and I think there’s more to come from us.

“We have to focus on staying level and being consistent because we have some talent here.”

Crucially, “not getting carried away” will be the pressing matter for Edwards’ Middlesbrough squad after such an impressive start.

Defeats will come over the course of the season, potentially this weekend with Preston predicted to be tough for Middlesbrough, but toeing the line between positive trajectory and keeping feet firmly on the floor will be the task Edwards needs to accomplish going forward.
