Southampton fans share huge frustration with ‘worst signing’ after bitter Hull City loss

It’s been a wretched start to the 2025/26 Championship campaign for Southampton, and on Saturday afternoon, Hull City made it even worse.

After a disappointing 0-0 draw with rivals Portsmouth last Sunday, Will Still was starting to face some pressure from supporters. Now, that has mounted even further.

The Saints were beaten 3-1 by the Tigers at the MKM Stadium, with the result dropping the Hampshire outfit down to 19th in the league table after six games, having picked up just six points from those matches.

Had it not been for a 95th Adam Armstrong consolation goal, the embarrassment would have been even greater for Southampton, and one player in particular has been targeted by supporters.

Finn Azaz labelled ‘worst signing’ as Southampton drop points again

For Finn Azaz, it’s not been the easiest of moves to St. Mary’s. He left current league leaders Middlesbrough for a side who finished rock bottom of the Premier League, and he has struggled for form from the off.

In three league games for Southampton, he has failed to register a goal or assist, having picked up one of each for Boro in his first two matches of the campaign.

Now, one supporter has called him the club’s ‘worst signing’: “This Finn Azaz has potential to go down as the worst signing we’ve made in years, just as we’ve managed to get rid of some of our worst signings in years. I’ve watched some lazy players, but my god. I’d rather play with ten,” wrote one Saints fan.

Southampton face Middlesbrough next weekend, and with his former club in town, there will be hopes that he can finally find his feet on the south coast.

Still accepted responsibility for the defeat, but he did push some of the blame onto the defence and alarm bells will be ringing for supporters if that is to continue.

However, there are also concerns with Azaz, who has not quite made the fast start to life at Southampton that many would have hoped.

Despite creating two chances for his teammates, it was another frustrating performance from the 25-year-old, who lacked the tenacity and energy that you come to expect from a player of his quality.

He struggled to be a threat in the final third, failing to register a shot and he was substituted in the 75th minute for Ross Stewart. With Middlesbrough making the trip to Southampton next weekend, questions will be asked as to whether Azaz should start, and fans may feel as though he may be best coming off the bench.
