Luton Town are now going through a post-mortem after a dismal 2024/25 campaign saw them suffer their second successive relegation, as they went from the Premier League to League One in two years.
Matt Bloomfield’s arrival at the club in January did inspire an upturn in form towards the latter stages of the season but the Hatters were unable to avoid relegation, and they return to the third tier for the first time since 2019.

Plenty of work was done in Bedfordshire in the winter transfer window to try and reverse some of the damage that occurred in the first-half of the season, with one signing making a huge difference in the run-in.
Thelo Aasgaard, who made the £3m switch from Wigan Athletic to Luton in the final days of that window, has been electric for the Hatters in the last few months – but his international team’s manager has fired him a warning ahead of this summer.
Thelo Aasgaard advised to leave Luton Town if he wants to progress with Norway
The 23-year-old made 17 appearances for the Hatters in the Championship, scoring twice and registering one assist, with his performances helping the team improve greatly.
However, he was unable to stop relegation, as Luton fans slammed their team. Nevertheless, Aasgaard will be a big player in League One and could prove to be the difference as his side aim for a return to the Championship.

Yet, if he does stay at Kenilworth Road, there is a chance that he loses his place in the Norwegian national team, with his manager, Ståle Solbakken, calling for the Liverpool-born midfielder to think about his future ahead of the transfer window.
He said (via: Nettavisen Sport): “It was a calculated risk. Luton were in a difficult situation when Thelo changed clubs, but it goes without saying that it is difficult to play for the national team if you play in League One.
“There are many leagues he can play in. He is a versatile midfielder with good qualities both offensively and defensively.”
Championship teams will be keeping a keen eye on Thelo Aasgaard’s availability
We’re just a couple of weeks away from knowing who will be playing Championship football in 2025/26, and Aasgaard will be the subject of interest from many of those in the next few months.
Luton will try and use his long-term deal to their advantage, but the pressures of playing for his national team at the World Cup in 2026 could be too much for the Norwegian and he may push for a move.
Wigan’s sporting director, Gregor Rioch, has previously hinted at there being a sell-on clause in the deal to sell the midfielder in January and the Latics will certainly be interested in seeing if he does depart.
Nevertheless, Aasgaard joined Luton with Premier League ambitions and just four months after leaving League One he has found himself back where he started, and sides in the second tier will quickly be looking to offer him a new path to the top flight.
