Luton Town fans slam ‘utter disgrace’ after being relegated from Championship with defeat vs West Brom

Luton Town’s 5-3 defeat at West Brom saw the Hatters suffer relegation again, which left fans enraged at manager Matt Bloomfield and his side.

Luton Town were promoted to the Premier League after beating Coventry City in the Championship play-off final in 2023.

Two years later, and the Hatters have been demoted to the third tier of English football, joining the unfortunate back-to-back relegations club.

Matt Bloomfield’s side visited West Brom on the Championship final day outside of the relegation zone by a single point, but with worse goal difference than those around them barring Plymouth Argyle.

As such, a win at The Hawthorns was imperative. However, the heartbreaking 5-3 defeat to managerless West Brom condemned them to relegation down to League One, and the Hatters faithful took to social media to voice their fury.

Luton Town fans fuming with relegation from Championship

Luton’s survival hopes were boosted by the controversial 1-0 win against Coventry City, in which Sky Blues full-back Jay Dasilva was dubiously dismissed.

The Hatters aimed to replicate their West Brom feat from 20 years ago, in which they pulled off the great escape, but failed to do so on final day as their miraculous survival mission failed.

Baggies ace Tom Fellows opened the deadlock after just seven minutes, but Millenic Alli’s swift reply brought the clash level moments later.

Further goals from Fellows, Daryl Dike and Callum Styles for interim boss James Maddison’s side were matched by late efforts by Alli and Jordan Clark, but the 5-3 defeat cemented Luton’s defeat and subsequent relegation to League One, which saw the Hatters faithful react furiously on social media.

After their fate was confirmed, one fan said: “Utter disgrace”.

Another posted: “This isn’t (Matt) Bloomfield’s fault.

“It’s a mix of the board sticking with a poor manager for months, poor recruitment, chasing a stadium that we don’t really need right now. A frustrating season all round.”

Another Hatters fan said: “Absolutely pathetic performance. All the good work of the last month gone to smoke”.

A fellow fan posted: “Disgraceful performance so far. Too many don’t care and are just going through the motions.”, as another said: “Utterly dreadful”.

“Most pathetic Luton team I’ve ever seen” argued one Hatters supporter.

How did League One go for Luton Town last time

Luton clinched the League One title in the 2018/19 campaign following their final day victory against Oxford United, marking the club’s return to Championship status after a 12-year absence.

Under the tenure of Nathan Jones, the Hatters scorched to the third tier summit, ending the campaign three points ahead of second-placed Barnsley.

Whether Bloomfield remains in the Hatters dugout for their third tier campaign next term remains to be seen, but as witnessed by Sunderland’s time spent dwindling in League One, it will be a mammoth task for Luton and the club’s hierarchy to navigate an instant return this next time season.
