Hurt and the drive to prove people wrong can be strong motivators for many people in life; however, when it comes to athletes, it appears to be more common, and this has been the case for one Birmingham City star.

He was left out of the reckoning at the international level for over a year, and this had a serious impact on him and his club career, as he has now sought to improve his form here before representing his country.

Now, he is set to make a milestone for his nation as he is about to feature in his 50th international this upcoming week, a proud moment for any footballer.

While his inclusion is only due to an injury to Pierce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday, this will not bother him, as should he impress, he will likely hold onto his place for the remainder of the World Cup qualifiers.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell driven by ‘hurt’

The Northern Ireland international is set to earn his 50th cap this week when he lines up in goal against Germany; however, it has not been an easy year for the keeper.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell is currently on loan from Birmingham City at Blackpool, and this is the exact refresh he needed after he was languishing on the bench for the Blues to allow him to make this achievement for Northern Ireland.

Speaking about this achievement, recorded by the Belfast Telegraph, he said: “It was really nice. It’s been a year since my last game, and it was not nice being away from the squad, but I’m really happy to be back and be a part of it and do what I can to help the team.

“I’ve been in the squad since I was 20, almost every single one. To miss a few hurt a little bit, but it was necessary to get the body back to what it needs to be, because I’ve gone seasons and seasons with maybe a couple weeks off, and it catches up with you after a while.

“When I got the call for this squad, I was really happy. I spoke to Michael, and I think it was just the case of the last year, getting that out of the way and having a bit of a refresh over March and the summer.”

Bailey Peacock-Farrell joins prestigious list

The Northern Ireland keeper spoke about the difficulty of reaching 50 caps for Northern Ireland due to the competition that exists for the position in the country, as he is battling with Pierce Charles and Conor Hazard, who plays for Plymouth Argyle, for the number one jersey.

However, by winning this cap against Germany, it will make Peacock-Farrell the third highest-capped goalkeeper in the history of Northern Ireland.

Only the legendary Pat Jennings with 119 caps and Maik Taylor with 88 appearances in the Northern Ireland goal.
