Birmingham City and Wrexham suffer blows in pursuit of Championship star ‘not for sale even at £5m’

The Blues and Wrexham have flexed their financial muscles throughout the summer window, but are not strong enough to convince one Championship rival.

Business from both Birmingham City and Wrexham has been synonymous with the summer transfer window, and that shows no sign of stopping on deadline day.

As well as adding several marquee signings of their own, both of the newly promoted clubs have been involved in several similar deals together over recent months.

Earlier in the window, Birmingham and Wrexham battled to sign Lewis Koumas on loan from Liverpool, with the Blues winning the race for his signature.

On deadline day, both clubs have now been dealt major blows in the pursuit of a highly coveted Championship star.

Birmingham City and Wrexham told Bristol City star Zak Vyner is not for sale

Bristol City star Zak Vyner has been in high demand this summer after his impressive campaign at the heart of the Robins’ defence.

Earlier in the summer window, reports emerged that Derby County lodged a £1m bid for Vyner, who played every single minute in the second tier last term under now-Norwich City boss Liam Manning.

With Vyner’s resolute defensive displays cementing him as a dependable central defender of Championship promotion-hunting standard, both Birmingham and Wrexham had eyed the 28-year-old, but to no avail.

Sky Sports News report: “Wrexham and Birmingham have been told Zak Vyner is not for sale by Bristol City at any price – even £5m.

“The player is relaxed about the situation and is enjoying his football under Gerhard Struber.

“He is already in the final year of his contract and could be an attractive free agent next summer.”

Vyner’s seventh season at Bristol City could be his last, with the defender in the final year of his contract.

What Gerhard Struber said about Zak Vyner amid Bristol City exit speculation

With Struber now at the helm, Bristol City have made a solid start to the second tier season, with two wins and two defeats from their opening four clashes.

Recently, Struber admitted that it was “no surprise” that Vyner was of transfer interest to fellow Championship clubs, and the Robins boss will be pleased to see the club stand firm on his future.

Struber told Bristol Live on Vyner: “I think that Zak Vyner has offers from different clubs, it’s not a surprise for me.

“He is, in the end, a very important player, and we can see it in every game, how important is he for the club, for the team.

“He is a Bristol City player, he grew here, so he is the face of the club, and we know what we have with him, but for Zak Vyner, I think he is very happy here.

“He is very, very happy here, and he enjoyed the time here, but I’m absolutely not surprised that other clubs have a lot of interest in him.

“He’s super important for the here and now, and if we were to lose him, I think this would do big damage for us, to lose a player on this level, so close before the transfer window closes.

“I think this would be damaging, but this is not a big discussion between us and the management.”

With Vyner “enjoying” his football under Struber’s tutelage, and the Robins boss making no secret of his adoration for the defender, the duo will both hope to go one better than last season’s feat in what could be Vyner’s final season at Ashton Gate.
