Burnley took a giant step to securing promotion to the Premier League on Friday night with a 2-1 win over Norwich City.

The Clarets are now level on points with Leeds United at the top of the table, only trailing The Whites by goal difference, while Sheffield United have dropped to third after losing their last two matches.

It promises to be an intense end to the 2024/25 campaign as the Championship promotion race heats up, with Scott Parker’s men heading to Watford on Good Friday.

Parker was full of praise for Hannibal Mejbri against Norwich, as he scored a brilliant opener to calm the nerves at Turf Moor, and he will want his side to produce a similar display this weekend.

A massive three points against the Hornets would put them one step closer to achieving promotion, and although a few experts are concerned about Burnley, some fans are already looking ahead to the summer.

Burnley fans want Tom Heaton to return to the club as a coach

Burnley are close to setting a Football League record, becoming the first team in history to not concede more than one goal in a game across the season.

Parker’s side have remarkably shipped just 13 goals in 42 matches in 2024/25, and ahead of the summer transfer window, supporters want them to make a move that could preserve their defensive solidity.

On Tuesday, it was confirmed that Tom Heaton is set to leave Manchester United after nearly four years at Old Trafford, and Burnley supporters have urged the 39-year-old to return to Turf Moor as a coach.

“I don’t mind a keeper at 39 years old and I don’t mind a keeper that hasn’t played a league game for 5 years. Can’t be both though unfortunately Get him back as a coach,” one fan wrote.

“As a gk coach yes got a lot to offer. Not as a player he’s 39,” another commented while a third said: “I imagine as backup at this stage, but he could be ana amazing coach.”

“No to old now, maybe as a coach!” someone else exclaimed, and another replied: “Only as goalkeeper coach.”

Heaton returning to Burnley would be emotional

Whether he comes back to Turf Moor in a coaching capacity or as a back-up option, Heaton’s return to Burnley would be an emotional one.

The former England international spent six years at the club from 2013 to 2019, accumulating 200 appearances and amassing 65 clean sheets.

Heaton helped Burnley win the Championship title in 2015/16 ahead of Middlesbrough and was an instrumental figure under Sean Dyche as the Clarets finished seventh in the Premier League in 2017/18.

A popular player among supporters and someone who will always hold the club close to his heart, it would be brilliant if promotion to the top flight was marked by the veteran returning to the Lancashire side this summer.

Ultimately, his experience at the top level would be vital for young shot-stopper James Trafford, whose performances have caught the eye this term.
