EFL Analysis watched the Good Friday action unfold at Ashton Gate in a 2-1 home win, keeping an eye on both sides to offer Bristol City vs Sunderland player ratings for every man on the pitch.

The Championship top-six affair got off to an exhilarating start, after Sunderland full-back Trai Hume was shown a straight red card by referee Oliver Langford with six minutes played, for tripping over Bristol City striker Nahki Wells.

Black Cats centre-back Luke O’Nien mistimed pressure on Wells, who spun in behind and was tripped by Hume whilst bearing down on goal.

With Regis Le Bris’ side down to ten men, forward Eliezer Mayenda carried the ball from the edge of his own box and fired emphatically past Max O’Leary with 31 minutes played.

Rob Dickie scored a stunning long-range strike ten minutes into the second-half to bring the top-six affair back on level terms.

The tie only looked to have one eventual winner, and Ross McCrorie did so for the Robins after he profited from a loose touch in the Sunderland box to smash the ball past Anthony Patterson with 15 minutes to go.

After an eventful 2-1 win for Liam Manning’s play-off chasers, which saw the Robins go four points clear of Middlesbrough in the Championship table, here are EFL Analysis’ Bristol City vs Sunderland player ratings.

Anthony Patterson – 6.5/10

Fantastic save from Bird’s shot before Earthy had goal chalked out for offside

Trai Hume – 5/10

Harsh early red card with six minutes gone after a foul on Wells, who was running on goal. Was sold short by O’Nien, in fairness to Hume.

Luke O’Nien – 6/10

Sold Hume short after going to tight on Wells in incident that led to red card.

Chris Rigg – 7/10

Clever feet and nutmeg with some tenacious tackling to battle well against Bristol City’s midfield.

Patrick Roberts – 6/10

Couldn’t impact the attack for Sunderland.

Tommy Watson – 5/10

Another lacklustre performance for Brighton-bound winger who was wasteful with ball.

Eliezer Mayenda – 8/10

Sensational goal, took the ball length of the pitch on transition and dispatched emphatically past O’Leary. Phenomenal centre-forward play from 19-year-old.

Failed to impact after coming on.

Salis Abdul Samed (for Rigg, 60′) – 6/10
