Sheffield Wednesday could have moved closer to knowing where Danny Rohl’s future lies as the German continues to attract interest.
After miraculously surviving in 2023/24, Sheffield Wednesday finished 12th in the Championship in 2024/25 as Danny Rohl built on the foundations he laid.
Despite not being backed financially by Dejphon Chansiri, he still achieved a mid-table finish, while the Owls were also in the run-in for the Championship play-offs at one point.
Rohl has overachieved since taking the job at S6 in October 2023 and, unsurprisingly, attracted other clubs to his signature.
Although the 36-year-old has Premier League interest, Rohl’s preferred destination is returning to Germany, and now a fresh update has emerged.

Werder Bremen place Danny Rohl on shortlist to replace Ole Werner
Sheffield Wednesday have been left in the dark regarding their manager’s future. Wednesday are unwilling to sack Rohl, who wants time to decide his next move.
The German is realistically waiting for a job opening, and according to BILD, he could be of interest to Werder Bremen after the sacking of Ole Werner.
The report claims that Werder would be ‘willing’ to pay Rohl’s £5 million release clause, which could accelerate his chances of being appointed.
While that is promising, Clemens Fritz, Horst Steffen and Lukas Kwasniok have all been placed on their radar to replace Werner.
In the 2024/25 campaign, Werder finished eighth in the Bundesliga table and were only one point shy of a European finish.
That is why sacking Werner was seen as a shock, but it could open up the door for Rohl, potentially granting his wish of returning to Germany.
Sheffield Wednesday need Rohl to leave as soon as possible
After Rohl burnt bridges with the fans, Wednesday supporters want him to depart Hillsborough as soon as possible.
Ultimately, for the Owls to have a steady summer, they need to have a new manager in place early doors, as Rohl’s exit from the club looks certain.
| Danny Rohl’s record as Sheffield Wednesday’s manager | |
|---|---|
| Games in charge | 89 |
| Wins | 34 |
| Draws | 19 |
| Losses | 36 |
| Points per game | 1.36 |
The Yorkshire side can ill-afford to play catch-up with the teams around them in the Championship, with some already starting to get their business done.
Sheffield Wednesday can’t start signing players until they know who will be taking charge come August, and right now, it’s looking increasingly likely it won’t be Rohl.
