Championship fans decide which three clubs will be relegated this season, one team has the ‘right manager’ for great escape

While a number of teams battle it out at the top of the Championship looking for promotion, a handful more are clinging on for dear life at the bottom.

It has been another enthralling season in the second tier, and there’s still plenty of time left for more shocks and stings in the final run-in.

A look at the bottom of the Championship table tells us that, realistically, anyone from 17th-placed Portsmouth down could get relegated, though it’s more likely a six-way fight between Stoke City, Cardiff, Hull, Luton Town, Plymouth Argyle, and Derby County.

Last weekend in the Championship, we saw Luton bag their first win under Matt Bloomfield, while Hull and Plymouth go head-to-head in tonight’s fixtures.

The table could change in a the blink of an eye, but fans across the second tier spectrum have had their say on who will end up losing their Championship status come the end of the season.

Hull City, Derby County, and Luton Town set for relegation, Plymouth Argyle can survive

The folks at the Second Tier podcast took to Twitter/X to ask supporters who they think will end up on the wrong end of this relegation scrap, and the fans have spoken.

A lot of social media users suggested that the current bottom three — Luton, Plymouth, and Derby — will be the ones to fade into League One, but there is a belief that there will be a resurgence for one team that shakes things up.

One supporter said, “The three teams already there,” while another added, “I think Luton and Derby are definitely for the drop.”

However, there was widespread agreement that if anyone can escape, it will be Miron Muslic’s Plymouth side. One neutral said, “If anyone of them survive, I’d back Plymouth,” while another said, “I think Argyle will make it.”

Muslic could be the key, it seems, with one person writing: “Hull, Luton, Derby – Plymouth have the right manager to keep them up.” Others suggested Plymouth will “just have enough to stay up.”

However, Luton also got some backing, with one fan saying, “What should worry Cardiff, Stoke, and Derby is Luton and Plymouth look like they have something about them now,” while another said, “Derby Cardiff Hull. I just see Plymouth and Luton having enough to put a little run together.”

Are any of the teams in the relegation battle really good enough for the Championship?

Whoever survives this season, it looks like there will be a really serious threat of relegation again next year unless drastic improvements are made over the summer.

Stoke City have been dismal, and Mark Robins has demanded change at the end of the season in order to have a better, more experienced squad to compete next year.

Oxford United have clearly run out of steam, while Cardiff City are very much at risk now, and don’t show any signs of getting better in the near future.

All four of those teams, plus any survivors from the group of Plymouth, Hull, Luton and Derby, will be looking nervously at the likes of Birmingham City, who are marching to glory in League One right now, and wondering how they will make it out alive next season.

The truth is, these teams are not good enough. The gap between the Premier League and the Championship is getting bigger, but arguably, the gap between the second and third tier is getting smaller, and time is ticking for the stragglers in the Championship.
