Birmingham City boss Chris Davies has predicted that one summer signing could transform an aspect of the Blues’ game.
Birmingham City kick off their 2025/26 Championship season as they welcome the Tractor Boys to St Andrews.
Following a historic and record-breaking promotion from League One, Birmingham City’s clash with Ipswich Town will provide Chris Davies’ side a platform to demonstrate the quality they have on offer, with many predicting the Blues to gun for a promotion push this season.
Birmingham City owner Tom Wagner has shown his financial firepower this summer, having significantly bolstered Davies’ options across the park.
Following several top additions, Davies has singled out one arrival as ‘dangerous’ after what he expected to add to the Birmingham City side.

Chris Davies praises Birmingham City signing Tommy Doyle
This summer saw Birmingham City sign Tommy Doyle from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The arrival of Doyle was highly anticipated after the experience he had notched at Premier League and Championship level, and there is no doubt that he can use that to thrive at St Andrews.
When discussing Doyle ahead of the clash with Ipswich Town, via Birmingham Mail, Davies said: “I’ve done a lot of work on the training pitch and created a clear plan for our strategy, plus Tommy Doyle arriving with the set piece quality that he has and we are still in the transfer window, trying to bring players who can be dangerous attacking set pieces as well.”
It would be expected that Doyle will be thrown into the first team starting side straight away as Birmingham City look to show their intent as they host Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town.

Tommy Doyle’s confidence is perfect for Birmingham
Going into the 2025/26 season, confidence is brewing amongst the Birmingham City ranks, and following the brilliant recruitment they have managed this summer, you cannot blame them.
The players who have joined Birmingham have nodded towards the club’s ambitions of returning to the Premier League as a reason why they were so compelled to join Chris Davies’ side, and that includes Tommy Doyle.
After Doyle signed for Birmingham City, he said: “I was saying to my dad the other day, because we were speaking about it (promotion), ‘Listen, I really want to be present and in the moment every single day’.
“We have a massive chance to do something special and there is obviously people from the outside looking in going, ‘Gosh, they can get to the Premier League, they can do this and that’, and of course we can but I think the main thing is to be present in the moment right now.
“We need to focus day-by-day and get the best out of myself individually and get the best out of my teammates. If we all do that I think we can make something special happen.”
Having Doyle in the centre of the park will help transform Birmingham City for the better; not just because of his quality, but the confidence that he exudes.
