Clearly, Chris Wilder is wasting no time in sorting things out at Sheffield United, with the Blades icon putting together his backroom staff already.
After a brief but disastrous spell in charge for Ruben Selles, Sheffield United have called on Chris Wilder to return and rescue the club once more.
Pundits believe re-hiring Wilder is the right call. In truth, there’s no way he could do much worse than Selles was doing.
There are plenty of winners and losers in this Chris Wilder return, but one existing staff member is certainly on the positive side of things with a promotion in the offing.

Chris Wilder to promote Gary McSheffrey at Sheffield United
According to a report from Alan Nixon, the Sheffield United manager plans to make Gary McSheffrey part of his first-team staff.
McSheffrey has been part of the Under-21 setup at United for some time now. Now, given the manner in which many young Blades starlets have stepped up to the senior squad, it’s now McSheffrey’s time to do the same.
It’s thought Wilder is keen to bring McSheffrey’s “knowledge and relationships” to the first-team environment.
With all the issues facing Wilder at Sheffield United on the pitch, it’s easy to forget about things behind the scenes. But, if he’s to unite this broken Blades team, he will need the right staff around him.

What Chris Wilder’s backroom staff looked like previously
When Wilder departed in the summer, both Alan Knill and Matt Prestridge left the club with him. Back in 2023, we also saw Keith Andrews (now Brentford manager) in the backroom team alongside Wilder.
Under Selles, there was a short-lived spell for the likes of James Oliver-Pearce and Tobias Loveland. Both coaches have, naturally, departed along with the Spaniard.
It remains to be seen what structure the new coaching team under Chris Wilder takes. But, the prospect of McSheffrey making the step-up certainly suggests we could see a different approach this time around.
Wilder has a huge task on his hands to get Sheffield United back in the promotion conversation. He can’t do it alone, but the potential return of Prince Abdullah could be yet another step in the right direction. It’s thought the former owner could step into an advisory role, which would surely be positive for Wilder.
