Sheffield United host Blackburn Rovers on Championship final day on Saturday as Blades boss Chris Wilder remains positive about looming play-offs campaign.

Sheffield United host Blackburn Rovers this weekend on Championship final day with their third-place fate in the second tier table already confirmed.

Leeds and Burnley’s Premier League promotion condemned Chris Wilder’s side to third, booking their play-off semi-final spot against whichever side finishes Saturday’s round of fixtures in sixth-place.

Before the season-defining campaign, Valerien Ismael’s side visit Bramall Lane, hoping to continue their purple patch of form and sneak into the Championship top-six picture despite multiple play-off permutations afoot for Rovers on the final day.

Ahead of the Rovers visit, Blades boss Wilder has made clear his side remain “uber-ultra-positive” about their upcoming play-offs campaign, despite lingering concerns from some Sheffield United supporters.

Chris Wilder disagrees with Sheffield United fans who fear worst for play-offs

The Blades have a torrid record in the play-offs, losing in all attempts to secure promotion in the campaign, whether that be in the Championship or League One.

Sheffield United’s most recent play-offs heartache came in the 2021/22 second tier season, in which Paul Heckingbottom’s Blades were beaten by now-Champions League hunting Nottingham Forest in the semi-finals.

Blades fans have been fearing the worst after missing out on automatic promotion, given that barren record over recent years, but Wilder admits his squad are keeping an “uber-ultra-positive” outlook in comparison to some sections of the fanbase, as he looks to turn club history in their favour this month.

With sections of the Sheffield United supporter-base lamenting the prospect of play-offs, Wilder said via The Star this week: “Absolutely, 100 per cent (the play-offs are something to look forward to).

“I’ve talked about 2016, six years in League One, nobody thought we’d get out of that. We did that. We talked about getting into the Championship and getting a foothold in that division.

“We had a foothold for two seasons, the second season resulted in promotion. Then we finished ninth (in Premier League).

“It’s only, and I’m not being critical, it’s only the supporters that sort of bring this stuff up, because all of us are uber-ultra-positive in terms of what we can achieve.

“We’ll finish 20 points clear of the team that finishes in sixth place. I’m not a mug, and we don’t take anything for granted, we respect everybody we play, but we’re in a good place.

“Everybody’s fit, everybody’s healthy, everybody’s raring to go. They know that they can achieve something incredibly special.”

Wilder has also offered a crucial injury update for the Blades squad with the semi-final days away.

Chris Wilder shares Sheffield United injury update for clash vs Blackburn Rovers

Sheffield United will need all hands on deck in the season-defining semi-final fixtures, against an unknown opponent as of yet.

Wilder wants a record-breaking end to the campaign on Saturday, and his hopes for that have been positive with the head coach confirming that combative central-midfielder Tom Davies is poised for a timely return to the Blades squad.

He told his pre-Blackburn Rovers press conference: “He’ll (Tom Davies) will be involved in the group, and he’ll be getting minutes tomorrow afternoon.”

The Blades boss also revealed that forward Ben Brereton Diaz will stay sidelined for Saturday’s Rovers clash, due to a virus, but is in line to feature in the upcoming play-off fixtures.

Wilder concluded: “The only one who will miss out tomorrow is Ben Brereton Diaz, who has a virus, so nothing from an injury point of view that will make him miss any of the play-off games.

“He’s not trained this week, so he’s getting back to where he should be but he’s the one which misses out.”
