Coventry City know that a victory over Middlesbrough on Saturday at the CBS Arena will ensure their place in the Championship play-offs for the second time in three years.

Five teams can still finish in fifth and sixth, with Bristol City currently one place above the Sky Blues while Millwall, Blackburn Rovers and Boro will hoping to leapfrog the West Midlands outfit.

The final day in the Championship will be frantic, and despite losing in both of their last two matches, Frank Lampard’s team will be raring to go this weekend in front of a sold-out crowd and there are sure to be fireworks in CV6.

However, the situation that Coventry find themselves in was not one that was expected back in November, and supporters will be extremely thankful for the impact that their manager has made during his short time at the club.

Frank Lampard has been the driving force behind Coventry City’s rise this season

Mark Robins was sacked by the Sky Blues six months ago following his now former club’s 2-1 defeat to Derby County, and they were languishing towards the bottom of the table with relegation feeling like a threat.

However, the decision was made to take a chance on Lampard, who had been out of work for over a year after leading Chelsea on an interim basis. He had not been in the Championship since 2019, but he has formed a great connection with his players and it has paid off.

Predictions for Coventry’s clash with Middlesbrough have already been made, and the extent of the 46-year-old’s impact is clear to see on the pitch, while they have continued to climb the table throughout his tenure and he will be relishing Saturday’s contest.

Coventry know that a win could see them finish fifth, while it will secure their place in the top six no matter what, with Middlesbrough looking for their ever win at the CBS Arena.

Frank Lampard’s Coventry City will be a threat next season if promotion is not won

While the play-offs are within touching distance of Lampard and his team, missing out this season is not the end of the world for them and they will look strong once again in 2025/26.

The ex-Derby boss has an excellent way of man-managing his players and these connections that he forms only boost the morale of the team. It is why they have continued to be strong in tough times this campaign and he will rally his troops in the summer if they remain in the Championship.

Mentality is what is needed in the lottery of the play-offs, and a final day victory will hand the Sky Blues a huge amount of momentum heading into the semi-finals. Sheffield United and Sunderland will be keeping a keen eye on the table, with there a chance of a shock in the next few weeks.

Nevertheless, Lampard knows the task at hand and he will be trying his best to make the CBS Arena the fortress that it is, for what he will be hoping is the penultimate time in 2024/25.
