David Wagner’s honest admission on the match at Norwich City coaching ‘no longer appealed’ to him

Norwich City have recently appointed Liam Manning as their latest manager, only a year on from the end of David Wagner’s tenure.

Manning replaced Johannes Hoff Thorup after the Dane’s sole season in charge, with Jack Wilshere taking interim charge at the end of last season.

Norwich appear to believe Manning is the coach that can take them back to the Premier League, a division they last appeared in back in 2022.

Manning has seen a small turnover at the club and is hoping that a David Wagner favourite in Shane Duffy leaves the club this transfer window.

While the current manager is probably relishing the challenge that is upon him, Wagner had different feelings midway through his tenure.

David Wagner lost his love of coaching in January 2024

Wagner was appointed manager of Norwich City in January 2023, taking over from Dean Smith; however, within a year he had lost his enthusiasm for coaching.

The former manager would carry on in charge of Norwich until May 2024, with little emotion being felt by Wagner throughout the rest of his tenure.

He admitted that it was after the FA Cup defeat to Liverpool at Anfield that the revelation hit him, while speaking to Sport 1, as reported in Pink Un.

Wagner said: “I can’t imagine that anymore.

“Every day is new, exciting, and thrilling now – that hasn’t been the case as a coach recently. I’m doing something new, and I think that’s great.

“I often asked myself how long I wanted to continue doing this coaching job. Then the offer came from Norwich, which really appealed to me.

“One thing was clear to me: being a club coach no longer appealed to me like it had in previous years. We lost to Klopp at Anfield with Norwich, and afterwards I sat on the bus, and it didn’t affect me at all, not like it did ten years ago. That’s when I knew I wanted to do something different.”

David Wagner’s new role in football

The former American international has not worked in management since his departure from Norwich City in May 2024.

He has opted to become part of the Red Bull set up, along with Jurgen Klopp, with Wagner being head of youth development at RB Leipzig.

Wagner cannot envisage himself returning to management anytime soon, due to the love, excitement and passion he has for his current role.
