Dejphon Chansiri slammed for ‘inexcusable’ decision as Sheffield Wednesday’s suffering continues

The Championship campaign kicks off in eight days, and as it stands, Sheffield Wednesday do not even know if they can field a full starting lineup.

For the third month running, the Sheffield Wednesday players have been told they won’t be paid for July, something that can have major implications on the football club.

Sheffield Wednesday’s players can now ‘refuse to play’, which is an outcome that would further damage their prospects ahead of the 2025/26 Championship season.

With the start of August looming, the Owls have still made no additions to their squad, while many of last season’s squad continue to exit the club.

Akin Famewo recently joined Hull City after leaving S6 on a free transfer, and he is one of several who have jumped ship, including winger Djeidi Gassama.

Dejphon Chansiri’s decision to sell Djeidi Gassama was ‘inexcusable’

Sheffield Wednesday fans were enraged that Gassama was only sold for £2.2 million after his seven-goal haul in the Championship last term.

The Owls supporters felt that he would become an eight-figure asset in years to come, with the 21-year-old already proving his worth at Rangers.

Gassama scored on his Rangers debut in the Champions League against Panathinaikos and followed that up with a strike in the second leg to send them into the next qualifying round.

Chansiri has made some damaging decisions this summer, but selling the Frenchman for just over £2m is arguably one of the worst.

Journalist Dom Howson has branded the sale of Gassama as ‘inexcusable’, writing on X: “What a start Gassama has made to his Rangers career. So pleased for him. Such an exciting, young player.

“It is inexcusable how much #SWFC sold him for. Rangers got him on the cheap. Was worth way more than they sold him for.”

Gassama came off the bench in the 57th minute against Panathinaikos, and just as he did at Ibrox, scored moments later and proved to Russell Martin why he deserves to start.

Gassama is a special player

Barry Bannan has tipped Gassama to succeed at Rangers, and although he needs to improve his consistency, he’s already proving he’s a special player.

The young winger has produced two moments of individual quality in the Champions League, something that hurts Wednesday fans to see.

But everyone at the club knew he had talent in abundance, having shown it last term, making it even more frustrating that he was sold for a measly fee.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Gassama earned a big-money move on the back of his Rangers stint, especially if he keeps up his current form.
