The 2025 summer transfer window officially opened for Birmingham City on June 1.
Birmingham City are getting ready for their first season back in the Championship, having secured an instantaneous return to the second tier after being crowned League One champions in a record-breaking season, clinching promotion in April 2025.
Manager Chris Davies has already implied that talks over possible transfer targets have been taking place, and a busy summer is expected at St Andrew’s. The club’s owners are plotting an ambitious assault on the Championship as they aim for a swift return to the Premier League.
Reports suggest Birmingham City will be among the biggest spenders outside the Premier League. With this ambitious outlook, we have taken a look at what a dream summer transfer window would look like for the Blues as they prepare to compete in the Championship.
Young goalkeeper James Beadle
The potential signing of James Beadle would be a smart move for Birmingham City as they prepare for life back in the Championship.
The 20-year-old England Under-21 international is reportedly targeted for a loan move from Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, and if he arrives, he would bring a wealth of valuable Championship experience from 57 appearances across two earlier loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday.
Standing at an imposing 6ft 7in, his potential arrival is expected to provide robust competition for the number one shirt at St Andrew’s, pushing current goalkeepers to raise their game.
This acquisition would perfectly align with the Blues’ goal to strengthen their squad with promising young talent capable of growing with the club.

The return of academy product Demarai Gray
Currently, with Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, Gray has reportedly expressed a strong desire to move back to England. For Birmingham, his potential re-signing offers a blend of proven Premier League quality and a deep emotional connection to the club, having played 78 games for the Blues after coming through their academy.
At 28, Gray brings valuable experience from the top flight, including winning the Premier League with Leicester City, and can provide the attacking force Birmingham will need.
While reports suggest he prefers a Premier League return and Al-Ettifaq would seek around £8 million, his history at Birmingham City could be a key factor in persuading him to drop down a division.

Making a profit on Jobe Bellingham
The potential transfer of Jobe Bellingham to Borussia Dortmund could greatly increase Birmingham City’s transfer budget, meaning a substantial financial boost for the newly promoted club.
When Jobe moved from Birmingham City to Sunderland, the Blues inserted a sell-on clause into his contract. This means that if Sunderland sells Jobe for a profit, Birmingham City is entitled to a percentage of that profit – reportedly around 15%.
With Dortmund rumoured to be preparing a bid of around £25 million for Jobe, this sell-on clause could potentially net Birmingham City a welcome £4.5 million.
This unexpected windfall would provide crucial extra funds for manager, Chris Davies, to invest further in strengthening the squad.

Robbie Savage’s son Charlie Savage
The potential signing of Charlie Savage would inject some energy and quality into Birmingham City’s midfield.
The 22-year-old Welsh international, son of Robbie Savage, had a strong season for Reading in League One, contributing 5 goals and 9 assists from midfield.
Savage’s experience coming through Manchester United’s academy also points to a strong footballing mentality. His attacking output suggests he could quickly adapt to the Championship.
A smart bit of business for Kwame Poku
Targeting Kwame Poku on a free transfer from Peterborough United would be a shrewd piece of business for Birmingham City.
The 23-year-old winger was a standout performer in League One, recording 12 goals and 8 assists. Poku is renowned for his blistering pace and ability to beat defenders, making him a constant threat in wide areas.
He also has a strong goal-scoring instinct for a winger. His contract expiry means Birmingham could acquire a player with significant attacking output and potential for growth without a transfer fee, making him an excellent target.

Another player that could return to Birmingham
A potential reunion with former Blues striker Che Adams is generating considerable excitement among the fanbase.
Currently at Italian club Torino, Adams previously played for Birmingham City from 2016 to 2019, becoming a fan favourite.
Now 28, Adams brings proven Championship and Premier League experience, invaluable for Birmingham’s step up.
His prior connection to the club and the owner’s financial backing makes a reunion a real possibility, offering a significant boost to Birmingham’s attacking options.
Birmingham players sold
Moving on certain players will be crucial for both financial and strategic reasons at St Andrew’s.
One name linked with an exit is Dion Sanderson. The central defender has reportedly fallen out of favour and could reunite with former Blues boss John Eustace at Derby County for around £1 million
Ayumu Yokoyama, the Japanese midfielder, is another who could be moved on. Despite flashes of promise, he hasn’t fully established himself, and a permanent exit would allow the club to recoup some funds and free a non-homegrown squad spot for a new acquisition.
Beyond potential sales, Birmingham have already seen several senior players depart on contract expiry, including Grant Hanley, Lee Myung-Jae and Neil Etheridge.
| Players signed by Birmingham City | Players sold by Birmingham City |
| James Beadle | Dion Sanderson |
| Demarai Gray | Ayumu Yokoyama |
| Jobe Bellingham | Grant Hanley |
| Kwame Poku | Lee Myung-Jae |
| Che Adams | Neil Etheridge |
The window does not shut permanently until September 1, and a lot could change in that time, but this would be a productive summer for Birmingham City.
