Excitement is building as Birmingham City return to the Championship, and co-owner Tom Wagner has made a promise that will delight the supporters.

After a record-breaking and high-spending campaign in League One, the aim for Birmingham City is to now blow the Championship out of the water.

Birmingham are planning an ‘aggressive’ transfer window that could accelerate their chances of reaching the top flight.

Tom Wagner wants to win promotion to the Premier League in 2025/26, perhaps following in the same direction as Ipswich Town, who also achieved successive promotions.

Work on the pitch and the transfer market will be imperative to forming their foundations, but it’s off the pitch where Wagner is making serious inroads.

Tom Wagner promises affordable ticket pricing for Birmingham City supporters

Wagner has been granted permission to build a new Sports Quarter that will connect a tramline to the Birmingham city centre, but also facilitate their plans for a new stadium.

The Blues want to move out of St Andrews @ Knighthead Park by 2029, with plans for Birmingham to build a 60,000-seater stadium, only 14 months after Wagner purchased land to build a new home for the Championship side.

With a £3 billion investment planned, supporters will anticipate more corporate, expensive ticket pricing. However, Wagner has promised he won’t price out the fans, even if some other American-owned clubs charge their fans a fortune.

When asked: “So this new development isn’t going to lead to fans here being priced out then? Wagner replied in an interview with BBC Sport: “You price out the people here then you have different people sitting in the stands. You lose the singing, you lose the passion, and then you’ve lost your product.”

“A lot of clubs are doing that, though, and some of them are American-owned clubs,” the interviewer said.

“They are, and that’s not how I’ll do things,” Wagner finished. “And I will prove that our path is a better one that leads to a better product, and ultimately, draws in more engagement.”

Birmingham City’s transfer window

Birmingham have already signed Phil Neumann after agreeing a pre-contract with the German during the January transfer window.

We also exclusively revealed that Birmingham have agreed a deal for Brighton’s James Beadle, the promising goalkeeper who spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

Meanwhile, there have been huge talks about Birmingham signing Kwame Poku from Peterborough United, with the 23-year-old set to decide where he wants to go next.

Che Adams has been linked with the Blues, too, suggesting they’re capable of attracting some serious Premier League-level talent this summer.
