Birmingham City’s latest arrival has big ambitions after completing his move to the Midlands outfit.

The 2025 Championship transfer window does not open until June 1, but Birmingham City already have one deal over the line.

The Blues spent big during the most recent season, and another big outlay is expected in the coming months.

We understand that Birmingham want to strengthen five positions and are going to be among the biggest spenders in the EFL.

However, the latest arrival at St Andrew’s did not cost Tom Wagner and Co. anything in transfer fees.

Phil Neumann on his Birmingham City ambition

Phil Neumann signed a pre-contract agreement with the club back in January, as he was out of contract this summer.

Hannover 96’s manager sent a touching message to Neumann this week when he was due to leave the German side.

The player is set to link up with Birmingham on July 1 at the end of his contract, but the club have already announced the deal and conducted their first interview with the player on their official YouTube channel.

In the interview, Neumann outlined his goal of taking the Midlands side back into the Premier League.

He said: “I’m really happy about my decision. I can’t wait to play in the Championship and be successful with Birmingham there.

“I always wanted to play in England. Birmingham is such a big club with a big history, and they fought hard for me and gave me a good feeling.

“I can’t wait to play my first game here, meet the fans and also meet my teammates. It’s a nice stadium, a really nice pitch and I’m really happy to be here.

“I think the club is not where it belongs and hopefully I can help the club get back to the Premier League.”

Phil Neumann style of play explained

During the interview, Birmingham’s new arrival also explained the type of player he is.

He said: “I’m a really fast player, a hard player. I like to tackle and block and sometimes score goals – not that often but hopefully I can score a lot of goals here at the stadium.”

The 27-year-old made 32 2. Bundesliga appearances over the course of 2024/25, scoring two and assisting one.

He is a right-footed defender who has spent most of his career operating at centre-back. However, Neumann has featured as a right-back on 97 occasions as well.
