Kwame Poku stance revealed amid Birmingham City interest, he has one big ‘consideration’ to take into account

Peterborough United winger Kwame Poku is one of Birmingham City’s top targets this summer, and we can exclusively reveal how he feels about a move to St Andrews.

After breaking the EFL points record on the way to winning the League One title, Birmingham City want to follow in the footsteps of Ipswich Town and achieve back-to-back promotions.

With the backing of Knighthead Capital Management, spearheaded by Tom Wagner, Birmingham are planning an ‘aggressive’ window, which could see them break their transfer record.

The Blues have already signed defender Phil Neumann, who will join the club on July 1, while Birmingham have also been linked to Harry Darling from Swansea City.

Darling joins a long list of players currently being touted with a transfer to the Midlands, including Peterborough United winger Kwame Poku.

We exclusively revealed in April that Rangers and Birmingham were ‘in talks’ to sign Poku, who sees his contract at London Road expire this summer.

As he’s only 23-years-old until August, any English side would have to agree on a compensatory fee with Posh, which can otherwise be decided via a tribunal.

This is why Darragh MacAnthony has given Birmingham City the green light to sign Poku, as him joining Rangers or a club abroad means they get nothing in compensation.

Speaking exclusively to EFL Analysis, transfer expert Graeme Bailey has told us that the Ghanaian is ‘weighing up’ his options ahead of the summer, as he arguably wouldn’t be promised a regular place in Chris Davies’ starting line-up.

“Birmingham are certainly in for him” Bailey said. “They do like him an awful lot. But I think Poku is obviously weighing it up as well. Is he going to go to Birmingham and be first choice? What I’m hearing about Birmingham’s plans, I think he’ll be on the edge. He’s not guaranteed to go there and start and I think that’s a consideration for him. It really is.

“So let’s see on that one. There’s certainly Birmingham in for him and Poku will be leaving Peterborough, but let’s see where that one goes because there are other clubs in for him.”

Poku could arguably join Rangers and be guaranteed to play European football, or move to a club like Birmingham who have ambitions of reaching the Premier League.

Either way, it won’t matter to Poku whether Peterborough receive compensation in his transfer or not, leaving the youngster with a huge decision.

Why Birmingham want to sign Poku

Birmingham lost to Peterborough United in the Vertu Trophy final and they would have had a close-up view of Poku’s performance.

The exciting winger terrorised third tier defences throughout the 2024/25 campaign, becoming an unstoppable force down the right when he cuts in on his dangerous left foot.

Kwame Poku’s 2024/25 League One stats
27 appearances
12 goals
8 assists
9 big chances created
1.2 key passes per game
80% pass completion
19% goal conversion

Poku, who has been predicted to pocket a club £30 million in the future by Posh chairman MacAnthony, is now ready to step up to the Championship.

The fleet-footed wideman possesses star-like qualities such as his ability to win a game in an instant, which is why Birmingham have established him as a top target and someone they think could fire them into promotion contention.
