Tom Wagner has helped transform Birmingham City, and his work in the last 12 months in particular has been sensational following his club’s relegation to League One.
After a record-breaking 2024/25, Blues are back in the Championship for next season and there is plenty of expectation following their high-spending and high-scoring campaign in the third tier.
Joining them will be Wrexham and Charlton Athletic, with the Red Dragons pushing for a ‘Hollywood’ rivalry due to the two clubs both having ambitious North American owners. But the West Midlands outfit now can envision a future where their home matches those ambitions.
Birmingham are pushing for the Premier League, and after months of lobbying, Wagner has finally had the next step of his development at the club given the go-ahead.

Tom Wagner given a thumbs up as Birmingham City prepare for new Sports Quarter
It’s been 14 months since Blues’ owner purchased land in the city to build a new home for the Championship side, with the American planning to create a new 60,000-seater stadium and leave St. Andrew’s by 2029.

Wagner’s plans hung on being granted transport links for the Sports Quarter, and the Government have given the thumbs up with West Midlands mayor, Richard Parker, being handed a £2.4bn kitty for transport.
Birmingham’s new home is at the top of the priority list for that funding with a tramline set to connect the Sports Quarter to the city centre and other areas such as Digbeth.
Mayor Parker said (via: Birmingham Live): Parker said: “This funding means we can now deliver a new Metro line to the Sports Quarter, connecting it to Birmingham city centre and unlocking one of the most significant private investments our region has ever seen.”

Tom Wagner has put Blues back on the map
It’s been a tough decade for Birmingham, and after they were relegated back to the Championship in 2011, they have struggled to challenge for promotion to the Premier League.
Nevertheless, this is a new era for Blues, and with the club’s board wanting to break their record transfer fee again this summer, there is plenty of reason to keep an eye on their season as they look to replicate Ipswich Town’s back-to-back promotions.
With James Beadle set to join, Chris Davies has already added to the one area where Birmingham looked as though they needed the most improvement, and the transfer window will only provide him with more opportunities to bring this squad up to scratch.
However, whatever happens this season, Wagner has won supporters over and the level of excitement at St. Andrew’s is only going to increase exponentially.
