The EFL is set to get back underway this weekend, with both League One and League Two set to begin, with fans excited before it kicks off.
Fans will be looking forward to showing up and watching their club through thick and thin, hoping they can experience fantastic memories this season.
Clubs update their badges every so often, sometimes for marketing reasons or to signal a new era; modern examples can be seen with Juventus, Bristol City, and Chelsea.
While it can be for the better at times, it often is jarring for fans to get used to, while on some special occasions proposed club badge changes can be a poor decision, as seen with the Leeds United example in 2018.
However, the fans from an EFL club have shared their thoughts on something ‘they should be embarrassed’ by, as it looks like ‘Chelsea’.
Peterborough fans react to their new club badge
Peterborough United have unveiled their new club crest as part of an identity rebranding, with the team believing the new design is a move towards a more practical and functional identity, and one that will attract both current supporters and new demographics.
However, Peterborough fans have let their feelings be known about the new design, and the overwhelming feeling is a negative one.
One fan said: “Not overly keen on the new posh badge; I think some really simple additions would’ve made it more bespoke and posh, but instead it looks like Chelsea from wish. Other than shirts, I won’t get any other merch with it on, as it’ll look too much like Chelsea, imo #PUFC.”
Another fan agreed with the sentiment as they said: “How have everyone on podcasts and stuff said this is a good badge? What are they seeing? It’s literally a BTEC version of Chelsea’s old badge, looks horrific, and does not represent us #pufc.”
While a few fans seemed to see the funny side of the new design and the similarities to Chelsea.
One fan said: “Chelsea might actually sue us here.”
Another one said, “No way we paid someone to make that. Are they a Chelsea fan by any chance and drive a Peugeot?”
However, there were a couple of fans who seemed to like the new design that Peterborough have produced.
One fan said: “Don’t get the hate for the new badge. It’s simple and modern, whilst retaining elements of tradition. Yes, looks a bit like Chelsea, but there’s countless clubs with lion badges. I think it will grow on people; it will just take time to become truly recognisable as ‘Posh’ #pufc.”
While another said: “Its a clean and nice design, no doubting that but. I just saw Chelsea, and my initial reaction was “its chelsea” its not got its own uniqueness; that shows it’s us. People who don’t know us would assume it’s Chelsea going through a rebrand. It needs minor tweaks to work for me #pufc.”
Peterborough’s view on the new design
The owners and leadership of Peterborough believe that this is a significant step forward in the club’s history as they look to reshape their identity, from a post on their club website.
Posh owner and chairman Darragh MacAnthony said, “We have to evolve, and branding is a massive part of that. I look at the big clubs and see how they are evolving; we have to modernise, and we have to move with the times.
“I was sceptical about the whole project at first, but having seen the journey that we have been on and how we have involved supporters, it just makes sense. We are evolving in our commercial department, we are evolving on the pitch and in the boardroom, and so our brand has to evolve. When I first saw it, it blew me away. I love it! I am really excited by it all.”
