Barry Bannan hailed as a ‘legend’ after Sheffield Wednesday vs Wrexham
Sheffield Wednesday expectedly found themselves on the back foot in the opening stanza against a Wrexham side that showed no mercy early on. However, the turnaround by the Owls was even more remarkable, and much of it comes down to the silky display from Wednesday captain Barry Bannan.
Covering every blade of grass, Bannan managed to fend off a three-man midfield utilised by Phil Parkinson, creating several chances.
Coming up against a side that is surely full of optimism after three successive promotions, as well as one that has received plenty of financial backing, it was set to be an insurmountable challenge for Sheffield Wednesday, but Bannan’s influence completely switched the tie.
After his performance, EFL expert Ryan Dilks handed plenty of praise to the Sheffield Wednesday veteran.
“I’ve seen a lot of praise for Barry Bannan,” said Dilks via The Second Tier Podcast. Whether you’re a Wednesday fan or not, it’s got to be recognised just what an absolute legend he is.”
Sheffield Wednesday performance vs Wrexham will be remembered for some time
As well as Barry Bannan, every Sheffield Wednesday player covered themselves in glory at the Racecourse Ground.
Even Ethan Horvath, who suffered a hairy moment for Kieffer Moore’s second on his Owls debut, grew into the game.
Speaking about Sheffield Wednesday’s overall performance against Wrexham, Justin Peach said: “There are so many superlatives to come out of it. The character of these individuals in the circumstances they’re in.
“We’re closing down on a payday very quickly. So there’s going to be a lot of uncertainty brewing.
“It’s just an astonishing performance, an astonishing turnaround.”
It will be a long and difficult season for Sheffield Wednesday, with survival feeling like a pipe dream because of the situation that Dejphon Chansiri has caused, leading to the squad being significantly depleted this summer. But they do have hope, if Henrik Pedersen’s side can continue to show as much fight as they did in North Wales this weekend.
