At this time of year, when teams are competing in the play-offs across the EFL, there’s often little time for compassion as competitiveness takes over.
From the Championship down to League Two, everything is on the line for the likes of Sheffield United, Sunderland, Stockport, and Walsall among others.
But, amid all the intense battles on the pitch, we’ve seen a truly touching and powerful story emerge, as AFC Wimbledon star Sam Hutchinson defied the odds to play through a medical condition and secure a play-off spot for his team on the final day of the season.
Now, the true impact of that issue has been brought to life, and it’s a story that has brought the footballing world together to celebrate his efforts and wish him a speedy recovery.

Sam Hutchinson’s story is inspirational and eye-opening
On the final day of the season, AFC Wimbledon confirmed their place in the League Two play-offs thanks to a 1-0 win away at Grimsby Town, with Hutchinson scoring the winning goal on 52 minutes.
Hutchinson played the full 90 minutes for his team, but after the game, spoke about how he felt something in his chest after six minutes and wanted to come off. Instead, he battled through, won the game, and put his team on the path to Wembley.
Incredibly, that was his first goal since the 2021/22 campaign when he scored for Sheffield Wednesday in League One.
Since then, it has been revealed that Hutchinson suffered “heart complications” on his way home from the game on May 3.
A statement from AFC Wimbledon reads: “Sam was taken to hospital on the journey back where he was treated and assessed. Sam then had a successful procedure at the end of last week in London and he now has a clear return to play plan in place.
“Everyone at Wimbledon extends their best wishes to Sam who is now recovering at home with his family.
“Whilst he is recovering, Sam continues to have an impact on the squad and we are hopeful we can end the season positively for Sam.
“The club would like to place on record their sincere thanks for the support and care provided at Queens Medical Centre and City Hospital in Nottingham, as well as Cleveland Hospital in London.”

Nothing is confirmed, but it is highly unlikely Hutchinson will play any part in the second leg against Notts County on Saturday, into which Wimbledon take a 1-0 lead. The same applies to the League Two play-off final, sadly.

What has been said about Sam Hutchinson’s situation?
After news of Hutchinson’s situation and his subsequent recovery reached social media, clubs and fans across the game shared their love for the 35-year-old.
The official EFL account wrote, “Wishing Sam all the very best in his recovery,” while one fan added, “Chin up Sam, what a player he’s been, can’t wait to see him back in a Wimbledon shirt.”
Another fan said, “What an absolute warrior! Get well soon Sam and here’s hoping for a full recovery,” while a third added, “Much loved up here at Sheffield Wednesday, all the best for recovery.”
The support even came from recent opponents, with one message reading, “All the best on your recovery. From a Grimsby fan. Football aside. Health is more important.”
Another wrote: “Post-game mentioned having a tight chest and this explains it I guess. Played 90 mins, scored a goal… What a warrior.”
