Forgotten player ready for fresh start at Norwich City to bring ‘devastating’ period to an end

Norwich City have been busy in the transfer market this season, and their business has been praised for being impressive to this point.

Since Norwich City appointed Liam Manning this summer, the Canaries have enjoyed one of the best summer transfer windows of any Championship club.

Despite Norwich losing Borja Sainz to Porto, the window has been an unmitigated success for the Canaries, following the arrivals of Mathias Kvistgaarden, Papa Diallo, and Jeffrey Schlupp, to name just three.

While the focus has seemed to be on the business being done by the Canaries in the window, there was already a fair bit of talent in the squad, and one of those players is looking to kick on this season after a ‘devastating’ period at Carrow Road.

Liam Gibbs looking for a fresh start at Norwich City

The 22-year-old only managed one appearance for Norwich City last season, albeit due to no fault of his own, but due to injury.

Liam Gibbs had been an important part of the Norwich side after joining from Ipswich Town, establishing himself in the team when they were relegated to the Championship.

However, after two seasons of injury hell, he is looking for a fresh start at Norwich, as he said to the Pink Un.

He said: “I know I’m a fit player now, but I still feel like I’m recovering into becoming a regular starter, almost.

“I feel like step-by-step is the way I go and look just for the next game ahead and make sure I’m available for that. Availability is what I’m chasing.

“To go from that to another injury back-to-back is really devastating. But mentally, we have people at the club who are able to help and family away from football who are all there as a support.

“It’s definitely been tough, and I’ve been able to work through that. But I feel like I’m in a strong mental headspace now. Like I said, chasing availability, chasing keeping my body fit, keeping myself healthy, and being the strongest, best version of myself to put forward to the new manager.”

Johannes Hoff Thorup had a high opinion of Liam Gibbs

Liam Gibbs was selected as captain for a pre-season friendly last year against Standard Liège; however, he would not feature under Johannes Hoff Thorup last season, apart from the Championship opener.

This was due to a terrible injury, but it could have been a breakout year for Gibbs under the manager, as he thought highly of him.

Speaking to the Pink Un, he said: “I like already what we’ve seen in training sessions because he’s really been starting well, even though he’s been out for such a long period.

“And so I will say that the level that he started with in training was on a high level.

“At the moment, obviously, we have to be careful with minutes and so on. Which is why we restricted him to only 30 minutes (at Standard). But that’s okay. We build them nice and easy. But from what I see, he will definitely compete for one of the starting positions.”
