Former Birmingham City star says he was under ‘lot of pressure’ during tough period with Chris Davies

Birmingham City enjoyed a superb 2024/25 campaign, but one player’s struggles have now been shared.

The Blues suffered relegation in the 2023/24 season and were forced to compete in League One last term.

The campaign could not have gone much better for Birmingham City, who set an EFL points record to win the title ahead of rivals Wrexham.

Birmingham now have plans to reach the Premier League in the near future and have set about improving their squad heavily this summer.

But such an influx of new players means that some previously key players have left, one of whom has opened up on his woes

Alfie May on Birmingham City struggles

Birmingham signed Alfie May from Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2024.

In total, the 32-year-old made 57 appearances, scored 17 goals and assisted nine in all competitions last season.

However, there was a period beginning in January 2025 when May did not score a single league goal in 12 matches.

Now, in the ‘Built in Birmingham: Brady & the Blues’ documentary, which aired on Friday, the forward opened up on that difficult period.

In Episode 5 of the documentary, he said: “It’s been a really, really good season, the lads have done superb. I’m playing for a massive club, trying to achieve something special.

“But I’m going through a period of not really doing much for the team. At the minute, I’m not scoring. I put a lot of pressure on myself. But you have to make sure you’re ready to step on that pitch because you just never know in football what might happen.”

Alfie May explains Huddersfield Town transfer

May has now joined Huddersfield Town, keeping him in League One for another season.

And he has since explained, as per BBC Sport, why he opted to join the Yorkshire club.

May said: “It’s no secret that this is a club that I’ve come close to joining in the past, and I’m really pleased the opportunity has come again to become a Town player,” he said.

“This is a huge club with massive ambition and that’s all any player wants to feel a part of.

“I was in a team last season that felt similarly so I know what’s possible when a squad clicks with a manager and there’s a positive feeling across the whole club, and that’s something I recognise here.”
