Former Premier League referee says there was ‘no choice’ when asked about Blackburn Rovers vs Ipswich Town abandonment

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher is the latest to weigh in on the decision to abandon Blackburn Rovers vs Ipswich Town.

Blackburn were winning 1-0 before the game was called off at Ewood Park due to a waterlogged pitch.

Jeff Stelling and Ally McCoist think the game should be replayed in full, a decision that would no doubt anger Blackburn.

It also means returning to Lancashire for a midweek fixture for Ipswich if a replay is the outcome. But, Gallagher believes there was no other option other than to call off the game.

Dermot Gallagher agreed with Blackburn vs Ipswich abandonment

Reacting to the decision on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch show, Gallagher felt that the officials had made the right call.

“It was the right decision, they couldn’t play on,” he said.

“He came back on, tried to roll it, tried to bounce the ball. There was too much water; it wouldn’t roll.

“It gets kicked through, a player goes after it and it stops. The dynamic of the game has changed. When I refereed at Derby County at the old ground, I used to have a 10-yard swim before the game.

“It was getting worse; it didn’t start like that. The rain kept coming. He might’ve been thinking he could get through it with 15 minutes to go but when you see the ball played across and it stops like that (there’s no choice).”

When will Blackburn vs Ipswich know if the game is being replayed?

A decision from the EFL on Blackburn vs Ipswich’s game is expected to be confirmed soon.

There is more than one factor to consider about the game, not just if it should be replayed.

If they decide the game should continue, a decision will have to be decided on whether or not it is played in full, and when the hectic footballing calendar allows for it.

On the one hand, it would be an incredibly harsh decision to play it in full for Blackburn, however, with more than 10 minutes of the game to play, there is every chance that Ipswich could’ve left with a point.
