Eberechi Eze’s representatives are in talks over a move to Tottenham, and in the eyes of one of his former Queens Park Rangers managers, it’s been a long time coming.

The Crystal Palace attacking midfielder has been admired by the Eagles’ Premier League foes for some time, including Spurs’ rivals Arsenal.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Lilywhites are working on deals for both long-term target Eze and Manchester City’s Savinho, with talks ongoing.

It’s not surprising the England international is being monitored by the country’s biggest clubs – and unearthed quotes show the former Millwall youth player was first tipped to make the step up over five years ago.

Mark Warburton tipped Eberechi Eze to be a ‘top-six player’

Eze began his senior footballing career at Championship club Queens Park Rangers in 2016.

Following a loan with Wycombe Wanderers in the first half of the 2017/18 season, he then broke into the first team under Ian Holloway and continued to impress under Steve McLaren and then Mark Warburton.

Warburton was the one who predicted Eze, then aged 22, would become a ‘top six player’ just before his star’s departure for Palace.

Speaking about the Greenwich-born player in April 2020, he said: “He’s maintained a great level of consistency, home and away.

“I honestly believe he is a top-six Premier League player all day long.”

After making 112 appearances for the Hoops, Eze continued to reflect Warburton’s high praise after signing for Palace for £19.5million in August 2020.

The former Arsenal youngster has been a hit at Selhurst Park, summed up by him scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final against Man City last season.

QPR’s sell-on clause status for Eberechi Eze amid Tottenham transfer deadline

QPR will benefit from any sale of their former fan favourite.

As per The Guardian, the Rs have a sell-on clause of 15% for Eze as part of the original £19.5m deal that took him from Loftus Road to Selhurst Park five years ago.

If his release clause is triggered, the Three Lions star’s former club will receive a whopping £10 million, adding to their hefty fee received for Charlie Kelman’s sale to Charlton and aiding them in what has already been an impressive window, with Wycombe’s Richard Kone set to sign next.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have learnt Eze’s £68million release clause expires on Friday, according to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook.

Previously, the belief had been that it was two weeks before the season began.

Thomas Frank has further accelerated his interest in bringing in the new attacking midfielder following James Maddison’s recent pre-season injury.

Eze recorded eight goals and eight assists in 34 Premier League games for Palace last season.
