Gustavo Hamer and Jack Rudoni debate divides Sheffield United and Coventry City fans, they’re in ‘meltdown’

Sheffield United and Coventry City fans have been arguing with one another over which player is better out of Gustavo Hamer and Jack Rudoni, with the latter set to replace the former at Bramall Lane.

Both Sheffield United and Coventry suffered play-off heartache this month, with the Sky Blues falling in the semi-finals to eventual winners Sunderland, and the Blades losing at Wembley in the final.

Now, Chris Wilder must rebuild his squad this summer, with key players like Gustavo Hamer and Vini Souza expected to move on.

We broke the news earlier today that the Blades are eyeing up Jack Rudoni as a replacement for Hamer, and it’s sparked some debate among the fanbases of both clubs.

Sheffield United and Coventry City fans argue over Gustavo Hamer

As the news reached social media, sets of fans from both sides started to discuss the idea of Hamer moving on and Rudoni heading to Sheffield United.

One Sheffield United fan suggested Rudoni “would be a big downgrade” on Hamer, while another said, “I wouldn’t say he’s a Gus replacement but I’d definitely take him. Probably still need to replace Gus on top of this though.”

Others don’t even think the transfers will happen, with one fan stating, “I’m not sure [Hamer] will leave. Clubs would prefer someone who can run about for 90 minutes.”

Meanwhile, a Coventry fan suggested there is “not a chance Rudoni goes to [United] to stay in the Championship for the next two years or so.”

Blades fans certainly enjoyed ribbing the Sky Blues supporters during the discussion. One said, “Get ready for the same ones saying Gus isn’t worth £15m saying Rudoni is now worth £25m,” and another added, “This would be hilarious. Ideally at a cut-down price too.”

Others suggested Coventry would go into “absolute meltdown” if Rudoni did go to Sheffield United, while another joked, “When the bigger clubs come knocking like Leicester, Southampton, and Sheffield United, little Coventry can’t do anything.”

Coventry fans gave it back, though, with one responding: “Last time Wilder tried to buy one of our players he cried about the price he was quoted. I really can’t imagine this one would go any differently for him. Rudoni has already replaced Hamer once; I doubt he would struggle to do it again.”

Another added: “Arguably the best midfielder in the league, we paid almost £4m for him and he still has three years on his contract. £20m and [we] might consider opening talks.”

Who is better, Gustavo Hamer or Jack Rudoni?

It’s worth remembering that Gustavo Hamer was named the best player in the Championship this season, and truth be told, he is probably the better player overall.

That’s not to detract from Rudoni, though. The Coventry man registered nine goals and 13 assists this term, against an xG of 9.0, while also racking up an average of 3.83 shot-creating actions per 90.

We can compare that to Hamer, who bagged nine goals and just seven assists, with an xAG of 9.0, and an average of 4.46 shot-creating actions per 90, and see that it’s a close call between the two.

Losing Hamer would arguably be more harmful for United than Rudoni leaving Coventry. The Blades can still be strong this season, but it will all depend on how Wilder responds if he does see his key men depart, and Rudoni coming in would be a great start to filling that hole.

Now, it’ll be interesting to see what kind of fee the two players bring in for their clubs if and when they go.
