Sheffield United have had an excellent 2024/25 season, but one man in particular, Gustavo Hamer, has really taken the spotlight.

The Blades have missed out on automatic promotion to the Premier League but will finish the season third and are among the favouires to win the Championship play-offs.

Sheffield United could set an unwanted record by becoming the team with the most points won without promotion in the second tier.

Chris Wilder commented on that record recently, but opted to spin it is as a positive, saying: “And I want to break an EFL record for [highest points tally] not going up because I think the players deserve to go deep into the 90s because of what they’ve done so far this season.”

If they are to break the record, it will in large part be down to the sensational season of Gustavo Hamer.

Gustavo Hamer reveals Chris Wilder behind Sheffield United success

The 27-year-old has nine goals and seven assists in the league this term, and Hamer won a Championship award late last month, being named as Player of the Season, much to the ire of rival fans.

The midfielder has enjoyed a remarkable 2024/25 campaign and has now shared the secret to his success.

After picking up the Player of the Season award, Hamer was interviewed by the BBC, and his interview has been shared on the 72+ EFL podcast this week.

He was asked about his upturn in form this campaign, going on to praise Chris Wilder for his impact.

Hamer said: “I think the freedom what I get from our manager. He tells me what to do in the defensive position, and he tells me to feel free,e and he gives me really the trust to play with so much confidence myself.

“And the only thing you can do then is, if someone, as Chris Wilder’s giving you so much trust, is reward him for it, and that’s what I tried to do and, to be fair, this season, it goes well so far.”

Why Gustavo Hamer stayed at Sheffield United

Hamer joined the Yorkshire outfit from Coventry City in the summer of 2023.

Sheffield United were then relegated in the 2023/24 season and The Star report he had transfer interest last year.

However, he has recently opened up on staying at Bramall Lane, saying: “I knew how the club was, I knew how the fans were, and I really enjoyed the six months I had with the manager in the Premier League.

“We had words just in pre-season, and we looked ourselves in the eyes and we said we can do this this season.

“Of course, there were some sounds, but that was, I think, more to make some chaos in the media personally. So we looked at each other, we shook hands, and we said let’s do it this season, and if there was anything I needed from my manager throughout the season. I think that brought us there for all with the confidence that the gaffer gives out to us.”
