There are a number of incredible players lighting up the Championship right now, particularly at the top sides such as Leeds United, Burnley, and Sheffield United.
The end of season run-in is almost at an end and there remains plenty to be decided still, but the top has been wrapped up before the final game of the season, with Leeds and Burnley escaping playing Championship football in 2025/26.

Leeds, Sheffield United, and Burnley have pulled away at the top of the league from Sunderland, partly due to the quality in their Championship squads. Numerous players from those sides have been vital in the promotion race from those three clubs.
Heading into the EFL awards last night, the Championship Player of the Year award had nominees from each. That meant Dan James, Gus Hamer, and James Trafford were all nominated, with the Blades midfielder winning the award in the end.

Gus Hamer wins Championship award to the frustration of Leeds and Burnley fans
Leeds and Burnley fans could not believe the decision, with many taking to Twitter/X to vent their frustrations at the award going to Hamer over their two nominees. Many Leeds fans, in particular, believed he was the least deserving winner of the three.
Another Leeds fan said: “You shouldn’t win any individual trophies if you don’t perform in the big games doesn’t matter what else you do in the season and it’s woke nonsense saying otherwise. Hamer absolutely nowhere to be seen against Leeds and Burnley when his team needed him in all of the 4 games.”
Another fan stated: “Don’t get me wrong Gustavo Hamer is an incredible player, but the player of the season was so obviously James Trafford. If a goalkeeper doesn’t get it for the season he’s had than how are you supposed to motivate any goalkeeper in the future to ever have a chance. Robbery.”
Another couple of responses from Leeds fans read simply: “Hamer winning player of the season is a joke” and “Hamer over James and Trafford? Wow.”

EFL Analysis’ alternative Team of the Season
Fans think Tanaka should be the Championship Player of the Season, but Leeds are already backing the midfielder to improve even more. An EFL Analysis exclusive revealed that Tanaka is seen as a Premier League player for Leeds.
He was named in the Team of the Season with James, Trafford, and Hamer; but there are a number of players who could have been alternatives to the official team above, with the below our picks from the omitted players:
- GK: Michael Cooper
- RB: Trai Hume
- CB: Joe Rodon
- CB: Japhet Tanganga
- LB: Junior Firpo
- CM: Josh Brownhill
- CM: Vini Souza
- RW: Tom Fellows
- AM: Jack Rudoni
- LW: Finn Azaz
- CF: Joel Piroe
Of course, there are still other players missing from our alternative side, including the likes of Josh Murphy, Manor Solomon, and Jason Knight. It highlights that there is so much quality in the second tier in 2025, and it doesn’t look like that will change anytime soon.
