Leeds United, Burnley, and Sheffield United are embroiled in a three-way tussle for two places at the top of the Championship.

The race for automatic promotion in the run-in heated up again this weekend, with Leeds United dropping points and Sheffield United and Burnley coming through difficult games to claim victory.

The Championship is one of the best and most entertaining leagues in the world, with more twists and turns to come yet. It is less about performances now and who can hold their nerve in the biggest moments at both ends of the pitch.

However, given the talent on display at each Championship team in the mix and the expenses paid for the best players in the Championship, there is no reason why all of the sides involved won’t finish the season strongly.

Sam Parkin predicts exciting final day in the Championship automatic promotion race

EFL pundit and Sky Sports co-commentator Sam Parkin is hoping for a grandstand finish for each of the teams involved. He expects a high points return from each in the next seven games to take it to final day.

Even with a recent Leeds dip in form, each of the three teams are projected to finish just shy of 100 points based on their current PPG rate, which would be among the highest points totals ever in second tier history.

Burnley’s improvement has impressed pundits particularly in recent weeks, although the difference between the top three’s goalkeepers is also a fair aspect to point out within all of this. Those fine margins could be the difference.

Parkin is excited about how it all might unfold. Speaking to Benjamin Bloom, he said: “If they [Burnley] can continue in the same vein in an attacking sense, then they’ve got an unbelievable opportunity.

“It’s going to be fascinating, I am dying for it to go to the last day. I would absolutely love that.”

He added: “I can’t remember it happening in recent times. I mean, imagine if we have got three teams that can get automatic promotion on the final day.

“That would probably be surpassing anything that’s ever been done in the Championship.”

It would be monumental and go down in history if that were to happen, albeit pressure can do strange things in the run-in. That could cause a drop off in form for one or more of the teams involved yet.

The remaining fixtures for the automatic promotion chasers in the Championship

Burnley have the hardest remaining fixtures in terms of the average league position of each side, but with experts warning Sheffield United, nothing is clear yet with seven games to go and the points so tight.

The Championship run-in

The Blades will know how crucial it is to build up a lead ahead of their showdown on matchday 44, which remains a convenient game from Leeds’ perspective.

Daniel Farke’s side must be at least second when that clash is played, making promotion firmly in their hands irrespective of the outcome.

That is why Opta believe they have the greatest chance of automatic promotion of any kind at 74.40%, even if there are clear signs that Leeds are falling apart currently.
