Preston North End are into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup following their 3-0 demolition of Scott Parker’s Burnley in the fifth round.
When the two sides met at Deepdale in the Championship two weeks ago, the match ended 0-0, but a weakened Burnley side were thumped by Paul Heckingbottom’s side this time around.
They made it to the final eight courtesy of an incredible 3-0 victory over their Lancashire rivals at Deepdale, meaning that they have reached the quarter-finals for the first time since the 1965/66 season
The home side took control of the tie in the first half thanks to a goal from Robbie Brady, who scored a stunning long-range free-kick against his former side.
Goals from the controversial Milutin Osmajic and fellow striker Will Keane secured their place against Premier League opposition, with Aston Villa next to face Heckingbottom and co. at Deepdale; where PNE have lost just once all season since Heckingbottom’s arrival.

The financial gain from Preston’s FA Cup run
The next fixtures in the cup will take place across the weekend of March 29 and 30. Preston are the sole representatives from outside the top tier left in the competition, and will now hope to emulate Coventry City’s success of last year and make the semi-finals.
Despite their somewhat underwhelming league campaign, with a play-off berth now very unlikely, Preston have drawn Aston Villa as they seek to keep their season alive with their run in the FA Cup. They have gained financially from cup run, as per the FA’s official website.
| Round | Fixture | Teams remaining | Prize fund |
| Third round proper winners | Charlton Athletic (H): 2-1 | 32 | £115,000 |
| Fourth round proper winners | Wycombe Wanderers (H): 0-0 (4-2P) | 16 | £120,000 |
| Fifth round proper winners | Burnley (H): 3-0 | 8 | £225,000 |
| Quarter-final losers | Aston Villa (H) | 4 | £0 |
| Quarter-final winners | Aston Villa (H) | 4 | £450,000 |
However, they face their toughest test yet to get the £450,000 for winning the quarter-final when they face Unai Emery’s side. Unfortunately, Kaine Kesler-Hayden will not be eligible to play against his parent club.
Villa have previously seen off West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur, and dispatched Cardiff City 2-0 at Villa Park with Marco Asensio bagging a brace. The two sides last faced each other in the second tier in 2018, with their most recent FA Cup meeting coming in 1967.

The FA Cup can have major financial gain for Preston
If Preston were to go one step further and reach the semi-final, it would be the first time they have done so since 63/64 when they ultimately reached the final.
The FA Cup semi-finals would also mean playing at Wembley Stadium, which Preston North End haven’t done since beating Swindon Town to achieve promotion back to the Championship in 2015.
Since then, they have been stagnant in midtable for much of their time in the second tier, including this season, but the riches of the FA Cup can unlock cash for next season, especially if you make it to Wembley.

Preston don’t have the resources to compete with the Championship’s elite and parachute payment clubs, so the reward of the cup run could provide them with a slightly larger budget next term in 2025/26, where they will hope to make further strides and improve again under Heckingbottom.
Their wage bill this season is £239,231, according to Capology’s estimates, with only four clubs estimated to have pay less than the Lilywhites. With this in mind, Preston have essentially paid for a full year’s worth of wages through their cup exploits so far.
