Hull City begin search for new manager as Ruben Selles sacked

Change is happening at the MKM Stadium as Ruben Selles has officially been sacked as Hull City manager.

After just six months in charge, Acun Ilicali has pulled the plug on Selles’ tenure at Hull City, despite him keeping the Tigers in the Championship in 2024/25.

Selles replaced Tim Walter as manager in December after the German did a terrible job in charge, as City looked threatened by a return to League One.

The 41-year-old breathed new confidence into the players after it was shot under Walter, and Hull began to pick up positive results, even beating promotion-chasers Sunderland and Sheffield United away from home.

Unfortunately, a run of just two wins from their final nine games resulted in Hull staying up by the skin of their teeth on goal difference.

Ruben Selles sacked by Acun Ilicali as Hull City search for new manager

On Thursday, the club officially announced that Ilicali has sacked Selles as manager, leaving the fanbase reeling over the controversial decision.

Hull fans were crying out for some stability, but instead, they’re now looking for their fourth permanent manager in the space of 12 months.

Most supporters felt the former Reading boss deserved the summer to assemble his own squad of players and have a shot at success.

Ultimately, the Tigers had the fourth-best defence in the Championship since Selles was appointed, telling of how strong he made them at the back.

But across the season, they also had the worst attack after scoring a measly 44 goals in 46 games, with Joao Pedro ending as their top scorer with just six.

Ilicali has been open about his love of attacking football previously, and perhaps he felt a run of two wins in nine and being low scorers wasn’t enough to convince him Selles was the right man for the job.

Who could replace Selles as Hull City manager?

Hull have entered a pivotal crossroads ahead of a huge summer.

Ilicali must get the next appointment right, as the fanbase is already losing hope in him, and he can ill-afford to have another chaotic transfer window.

It was reported that Hull wanted Tony Mowbray as manager. However, claims he was interested in taking the job in East Yorkshire were dismissed.

Ilicali could likely replace Selles with another foreign manager, with some supporters hoping he doesn’t dip into the Turkish market amid links to Arda Turan.

That being said, it remains to be seen who emerges as a front-runner for the job, as there are several names who could be of interest.
