As the final day of the Championship approaches, Hull City must do something that they have only done once in the last 20 years to guarantee survival.
Hull City suffered defeat to Derby County at the weekend, a game that shifted the landscape of the Championship relegation dogfight.
Before the game, Tigers boss Ruben Selles knew that a win against John Eustace’s side would guarantee their survival in the second tier, but a brilliantly taken header by Derby County’s Nat Phillips sent the Rams away with a crucial win.
The Tigers will be hoping to respond by notching a win on the final day against Portsmouth, however, one record that Hull City have been plagued with in recent years could come back to bite them at the worst time possible.

Hull City will need to break unwanted final-day record to secure Championship survival
With one game left of the 2024/25 Championship campaign, Hull City find themselves in 22nd, but know that a win on their travels against Portsmouth.
On the surface, it seems very viable that Hull City will be able to notch the win needed, but looking at their record in the previous 20 years, it isn’t quite as easy as expected.
In the last 20 years, excluding play-off games, Hull City have won just one game on the final day of the regular league season, coming in the 2015/16 promotion winning campaign against Rotherham United.

Ruben Selles must give current Tigers side a point to prove vs Portsmouth
With such an absurdly poor record that Hull City have held in their recent history, this should only gives Selles’ side more motivation to prove any doubters wrong on the final day.
A draw could potentially be enough for Hull to stay in the Championship next season, providing that Luton Town, Preston North End, or Derby County suffer defeat, ther latter of which by three goals, but Selles will want his side to seal their feat themselves, which can be done with a victory.
If avoiding the drop to League One isn’t enough motivation to leave everything out on the pitch, then being able to break such a poor club record will just about hopefully kick it over the line for this Tigers side.
